This is what was said about them two years ago by Sesame's Workshop.

"Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets™ do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.”

Clearly they were watching The 700 Club and just dozed off.

Very few kids would see or notice the New Yorker. And most of those that do will think nothing more of it then snuggling on the couch with their sibling or parent.

For the rest of us, Bert & Ernie are part of OUR childhoods, too. I think its a lovely message.

And I would think, they would need to have Henson's permission for this, no? (And I mean the corp, not the man.)
