Takashi Miike is the master of Japanese Horror. AUDITION is his best known, and intentionally very slow-paced (but worth it). His scariest films would be GOZU, IZO and ICHI THE KILLER - be warned its more gross-out gore than monsters or mood, though he is exceptional at creating both of those as well.
I've only seen a couple of his films, but I have liked the ones that weren't mostly based on slow torture. I just can't watch torture flicks. Slow, painful suffering with long scream sequences are just no fun to watch. I haven't seen Imprint because I gave up on Masters of Horror when I watched an episode that graphically depicted a very realistic beheading of a woman tied to a chair and with all the controversy regarding beheading videos from the Middle East, I was just saddened and offended.
Special Mention: CANNIBAL HALOCAUST by Ruggero Deodato. Title says it all... PLUS it's REAL Blair Witch twenty years earlier...
Well, the only real part is the torturing and killing of live animals such as the coatimundi and the monkey. I can't think of a single reason for anyone to watch this film.
and...it's paink!
Well, that just made a booger hit the desk.
I forgot to list Audition and Tale of Two Sisters.

Stop it, you two! I'm gonna pee!
If I had a tampon...I'd throw it.
CANNIBAL HALOCAUST: Ok, MisterMatt smartypants - YOU tell me how they achieved the makeup effects to make the castration that realistic without ever having the camera cut away. I am a JUNKIE for this type of stuff and there's a reason people like me consider this the holy grail of horror. I think it actually might be real. The sex scene sure is (check for penetration on the director's cut if you don't believe me, it's OBVIOUS)...
There's a REASON the film is as famous as it is and the animal torture and killing, 100% legal by the way, is NOT it. NO ONE has seen the guy who was castrated according to many sources. He either really got into his role and diappeared or the castration was real or some combination of the two. I guess we will never know.
But DO go out and see it to judge for yourselves! The problem is, everyone says they want to be actually scared and disgusted by a horror film and when I pop this or IMPRINT in they suddenly realize they really, really don't.
SCARY is for fun, HORROR is an artform. I have no idea which CANNIBAL HALOCAUST is, but it CERTAINLY is not something to be written off as merely an exercise in style.
P
P.S. It is clear from the implication that CANNIBAL HALOCAUST is the REAL Blair Witch because it is the first horror film obstensibly about 2 groups of people going into the woods, one group to "find" the "lost ones" from the previous trip, and the inherent paranoia and endings of both films. Without CANNIBAL HALOCAUST I doubt there would be BLAIR WITCH. Roth and Tarantino share this opinion, if that makes any difference. CELL would have been an amazing Roth zombie movie, but I think Roth respects King enough to want to do one of the Great King books/stories (I'd let Roth do another SALEM'S LOT, but I'd prefer to see him tackle GERALD'S GAME or THE REGULATORS (technically by King pseudonym Richard Bachmann) though neither of those is Great King)
P.P.S. MisterMatt - check out Argento's two entries in Masters of Horror, PELTS and JENIFER. The latter stars Steven Webber (who we love here at BWW!) and has a fantastic conceit that I don't think I've ever seen on film before. PELTS stars Meat Loaf (who is excellent) and contains two of Argento's best sequences in years. If you have problems with (fake) animal violence or SPOILER peoplesewing themselvesshut SPOILER it may not be the thing for you. I definently would NOT recommend IMPRINT, as it is indeed the most disturbing horror film I've ever seen and I've seen the vast majority of them (and written a few myself).

you'd miss and it would just stick to the wall, dood.
MM, I was waiting for you to join this discussion.
And thanks for reminding me about The Mist. I don't know how I could forget that one since it's problably in my top 10.
Oh I love The Mist! I stumbled upon a radio dramatization of the book, it is very good.
Pgenre - The animal killings were definitely real and probably the sex, too (though this is not entirely unusual), but the rumors of the "snuff" qualities of the film had all been quashed years ago. The film earned its place in the horror genre as one of the most controversial and rumor-laden horror films ever made, but I would never think to encourage anyone to watch it without mentioning some VERY specific caveats. Not cool.
Matt-I"m glad you mentioned American Werewolf in London. I love that film! I think it's a comedy/horror movie (think the dead guy coming back and haunting David what's his name).
That scene, though, when he's turning into a werefol to "Blue Moon" is one of the best. I loved the juxtaposition of the the very calm and soothing version of that song matched with the horrifying, detail-laden transformation into the wolf. I could go for seeing that right now!
Sorry, MisterMatt i never make excuses for art. It is what it is. If people can't handle it, it's their problem. If they take issue with the film upon my recommendation than it's THEIR issue, not mine or Deodato's or anyone else's.
Your post seems to imply that all this information you present is fact. It isn't. Check out the commentary with Deodato himself or any of the HOURS of bonus materials on the recently released DVD. It's much more complicated than animal torture and porn, lemme tell you.
I find it REALLY sad that most people here think that American trash is good horror. THE SHINING is really the only original American horror film of the last thirty or forty years save a few winners.
I, too, would recommend THE MIST because of not only Marcia Gay Harden's ferocious performance and Darabont's loving and meticulous direction (Watch the B&W version on the dvd - it's a an entirely different experience somehow!), but explicitly BECAUSE of the last 2 minutes. King and I agree it's better than the book. I suppose you can always go back to the book/cd if you don't like it!
P
P.S. Deodato makes a cameo in HOSTEL I and Miike makes a cameo in HOSTEL II as participants in the Game, btw, as they are some of Roth's favorite directors.
House Of Wax - Original
House On Haunted Hill - Original
The Abomnible Dr Phibes
Horror Of Dracula
Curse Of Frankenstein
Frankenstein - Original
Dracula - Original
Wolfman - Original
The Invisible Man - Original
Jane - That was a gorgeous scene and quite the special effects wonder for its time.

Um, ok. Still not cool, though.

Okey dokey. I guess it was all real and Deodato is still in prison. Or perhaps it isn't and as a result, he's not. Regardless, the debate died out nearly twenty years ago. I never said the film wasn't more complicated than animal toture (and killing) and porn, I just said I would not recommend it to anyone, especially without warning them of some of the contents which I believe to be obviously offensive to most people in a much more disturbing way than simply violence and gore. But kudos on your artistic integrity, I guess. You'll certainly teach them a thing or two!
I find it REALLY sad that most people here think that American trash is good horror.
Did they say it was "good horror" or did they merely say they enjoyed it? Why is that REALLY sad?
King and I agree it's better than the book. I suppose you can always go back to the book/cd if you don't like it!
Or I can simply watch the film again and turn it off just before the final reveal AND read the book again, which is wonderful.

P.S. That review is what turned me on to Argento (and the wide world of International horror) and DVDVERDICT is the ONLY dvd review site I trust, this is one of only a handful of films to receive a 100 in either STORY or ACTING. Total score: 97

Mr.Roxy's list by far is the best. All of them are favorites! Dr.Phibes and Theatre of Blood are two films I watch every years.Hammer Dracula films are just cool for words,in my opinion.
Two films that terrified me as a kid. One a film Called MAGIC with Anthony Hopkins and Ann Margaret and Burges Meredith. The dummy in that movie was too creepy for a kid my age to deal with.
The second was a film called THE LEGEND OF BOGEY CREEK. My brother said I literally was trembling while watching that film. That is the only film I ever saw as a kid where I slept with the lights on that night. Watched it again a couple years ago. I had not seen it since I was a kid and it still gives me the chills. They just don't make good horror films anymore,in my opinion.
Oh man! I totally forgot about Magic!! That dummy was SOOOO freaking scary!
I would love to see that one again...
I have a DVD of The Legend of Boggy Creek. It is CREEPY!
Teaser to MAGIC:

And like musical theatre, people have different reasons for watching and enjoying all kinds of horror films. I don't pretend Mamma Mia is Caroline, or Change, but it doesn't mean I can't enjoy it or love it or call it one of my personal favorites simply for the way it makes me feel when I watch it. So what?
OK, not sure if this counts but it scared the Jesus out of me!
