An American In Paris on TV now

*bump*

How dare this thread be on the THIRD page!!

Thinking of Pattifan's An American In Paris post. Wishing I were in Paris and having Gene Kelly sing a Gershwin love song to me. :)

"It's very clear..."

Happy June!!!

You would make a fine Jerry Mulligan, Andy! It's nice work if you can get it...
I sing for myself. I sing when I want, whenever I want to, just for me. I sing for my own pleasure. Do you understand that?

An American In Paris on TV now

It's very clear
Our love is here to stay ;
Not for a year
But ever and a day.
The radio and the telephone
And the movies that we know
May just be passing fancies,
And in time may go !
But, oh my dear,
Our love is here to stay.
Together we're
Going a long, long way
In time the Rockies may crumble,
Gibralter may tumble,
There're only made of clay,
But our love is here to stay.

CM2 - there was no dissing, just a lack of celebrating! But enough about Molly and Paris, where is Judy?

Madame Satan

It's REALLY bad, and not in a good way, BT.

In over two hours of tedium, there are only twenty minutes that are any good: the masquerade ball in the zeppelin where Madame Satan (Kay Johnson) makes her appearance to seduce her boring hubby away from tarty Lillian Rooth.

Of course, this being a Cecil B. DeMille film (his only film for MGM , I believe) the Zeppelin crashes and Johnson & boring hubby are reunited while Roth's parachute lands her in the middle of a men's bath house ...so I guess she has a happy (???) ending, too. Maybe.

You know it has to be bad when there is a fellow in a costume like that one... yikes! Though the Miss Top Hat costume I saw looked rather intriguing.

Mstr, I bow to you. Thanks for the review. Who is the guy? Looks like Fairbanks but realizre that it cannot be him.

But I do love DeMille's "clothes horse" movies with Gloria Swanson. Some of them are a hoot!!

It's Reginald Denny, Andy!

Richard Barrios describes the masquerade ball as "one of the great examples of wierdness in American pop cinema: a twilight zone wherein musical comedy meets disaster epic, all designed & costumed by Adrian with the fathest Art Deco affectation." The party guests sing "The Cat Walk" as they scamper across catwalks to board, assisted by chorus girls in cat suits; Roland Young conducts a musical "Slave Girl Auction", Kay Johnson makes her appearance in an operetta style "Meet Madame" and a futuristic "Ballet Électrique" which "passes all description", and seems to entice the zepplin to be struck by lightning.

It was MGMs costliest film of the yesr (just under $1 million to make in 1930 dollars) and it was a huge flop - posted a loss of $400,000.

Well, with a title like "Madam Satan," I could have told LB that it wasn't gonna do well! The old fart never asked for my opinions though...

Madame Satan

I always crack up at the part in Unsinkable Molly Brown when Molly is standing in the life boat congratulating herself for being unsinkable while people are dying around her.
"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter
