oh, that's like asking a mother which child she loves best...

but, I think I have to go with The Wizard of Oz.

I can't decide. It's impossible.

re: Favorite MGM musical

oh... I thought from the title of your thread that I could only select one.

Well, that changes things!

I think my real favorite would have to be The Harvey Girls...

re: Favorite MGM musical

I love that one, too.

BT, this is just too hard... Can I cheat and say 'all of the above'?

re: Favorite MGM musical

I have two favorites: Meet Me In St. Louis and The HArvey Girls. My mother tells me that when I was a baby she used to sing the Atchinson Topeka and The Santa Fe to me and I would jump up and down in my play pen and clap my hands. My grandfather used to sing the Trolley song to me and it has been a favorite of mine to this day.
"Friends are the people you chose as family."....Me.

re: Favorite MGM musical

Love The Trolley Song. And Meet Me In St. Louis. Both songs had 'silly words' which used to make me giggle when Mom sang them to me before bed.

I have to sit down and watch more of these...

Glebb may wish to tell you about luring me out of bed one day by putting Meet Me In St. Louis in the VCR in the living room and then turning the volume up. Yes, I got up! :0

Okay, absolute faves: An American In Paris, Meet Me In St Louis, Oz, Good News, For Me and My Gal, On the Town, The Pirate (adore that one), Kiss Me Kate

Singing in the Rain! How could I pass it. Ok, that's the one.

Me too, Chrys... I'm gonna have to take note and start renting.

re: Favorite MGM musical

“Singin’ in the Rain”…That moment when the camera swoops in for a close-up as Gene Kelly sings “C’mon with the rain, I’ve a smile on my face” is just about as close to perfect as movies get.

Kiss Me Kate - you can't help but sing along to all of the wonderful songs!

Lately, I've been re-watching some of the older ones. Like Naughty Marietta and Babes In Toyland.

OK, the day was pretty crappy today , but just reading the list made me smile... I'm going to put in Meet Me In St. Louis and open up a good bottle of wine. Things are looking up :)

re: Favorite MGM musical

When Louis came home to the flat,
He hung up his coat and his hat,
He gazed all around, but no wifey he found,
So he said "where can Flossie be at?"
A note on the table he spied,
He read it just once, then he cried.
It ran, "Louis dear, it's too slow for for me hear,
So I think I will go for a ride."

CHORUS

"Meet me in St. Louis, Louis,
Meet me at the fair,
Don't tell me the lights are shining
any place but there;
We will dance the Hoochee Koochee,
I will be your tootsie wootsie,
If you will meet in St. Louis, Louis,
Meet me at the fair."

Verse two

The dresses that hung in the hall,
Were gone, she had taken them all;
She took all his rings and the rest of his things;
The picture he missed from the wall.
"What! moving!" the janitor said,
"Your rent is paid three months ahead."
"What good is the flat?" said poor Louis, "Read that."
And the janitor smiled as he read.

CHORUS

"Meet me in St. Louis, Louis,
Meet me at the fair,
Don't tell me the lights are shining
any place but there;
We will dance the Hoochee Koochee,
I will be your tootsie wootsie,
If you will meet in St. Louis, Louis,
Meet me at the fair."
