When I was in elementary school nothing brought me more pleasure than the original Nintendo Entertainment System. The games and their 16 bits of fun practically defined my childhood. Off the top of my head I can think of the best games being:
Super Mario Bros. 2 (I loved being Princess Peach...which explains alot)
Bubble Bobble
Contra (who didn't have the cheat code?)
Maniac Mansion
The Legend of Zelda (the first one only...the second one blew hard)
Anyone else care to chime in on their favorite games for the NES?
Super Mario Bros. 2 AND 3 (I loved the raccoon hat!)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Pizza Arcade
Duck Hunt (still TOO much fun)
Tetris
This is seriously making me want to plug in my NES and have some video game time...
I loved Duck Hunt too, although I was extremely lazy and just held the gun up against the screen. It always annoyed me that you could shoot the ducks but not that damn dog.
I still have a working NES I got for Christmas in 1989. My favorite games are Paperboy and Snake Rattle 'n' Roll.
Techmo Bowl and Techmo Super Bowl were two of the greatest football games ever created. I also loved Metroid, Battletoads (remember that one!), Duck Tales, Castlevania, and Mega Man 1, 2 and 3.
Mario 1 & 3. Both changed the video game landscape so amazing.
Enjolras, I totally forgot about Battletoads, loved that game! And the megaman games were great except that I always got annoyed with games where you had to spend a great deal of time jumping from one ledge to another.
Just thought of some more gems:
Blaster Master
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the first one)
Track and Field
Mappy Land
I miss my NES!
I agree with any mention of the greatness of CONTRA.

Mario 1, 2, & 3
Bubble Bobble
Double Dragon
Contra
Home Alone
The Goonies
and there was this game, i CANNOT remember what it was called..but it had like puzzles and trivia...it was great
Mario 1, 2 and 3.
Zelda...best game ever.
Donky Kongs.
The original Zelda and the first Final Fantasy (which I think was actually FF III in Japan) were both my favorites, followed closely by the Mario Bros. series.
I did love me some Contra and Mike Tyson's Punch Out.
The original Final Fantasy was the same in the U.S. and Japan. The second, third and fifth installments were never released in the U.S. (well, not until some recent anthologies) and that's when the numbering system got off. Geek points for me!
My first games that got me addicted were Kung Fu, Excitebike, and of course, the original Super Mario and Zelda. I never beat Mike Tyson until the Game Genie came along, however. I also played Gyromite, but by holding the second controller in my hand, never by using that stupid robot. And Matt, I used to cheat the same way with the gun.
eta: And Contra, but only with the little cheat that gave you 30 lives. Same with Life Force.
I think the old system is still functioning at my parents' house somewhere. They liked Tetris, and that's about it. And that one about the little walking ball that turned things into eggs. Lolo or something like that.

Wait, was Metroid on the NES or just the Super? Also, let's not forget Mega Man.
Ha. Who used to have the joke about the Mega Man Robot Naming Committee? Was it Seanbaby? Hehe. Wood Man.
Metroid was originally on the NES. If you beat it fast enough, you got to find out that Samus was really a chick.
Yes, I did that. I was such a gaming geek.
Of course, now I really just miss my Atari and the original Pitfall.
The original Metroid was on the NES, and don't worry I didn't forget Mega Man!
Here are some others I thought of:
--Ninja Gaiden
--Dragon Warrior
--Double Dragon
--Caveman Games
--Adventure Island
--Kid Icarus
-- and the incomparable "A Boy and his Blob"
I remember Dragon Warrior. It came as a free gift when I first subscribed to NINTENDO POWER magazine. I was seven and never played an RPG before so I never had much luck with. I can appreciate it now but at the time I thought it was the dumbest game ever made. What seven year old wants to play a game where they have to spend half their time reading?
And the game genie was a gift from heaven for me. I would not have beaten half of my games without it.
I loved Dragon Warrior. My sister tried to play it but got mad whenever she was killed and the message came up: "Thou art dead."
I Love that I have all of these games. When I go home for Christmas, I might come back toting my Nintendo if it still works.
I forgot how much I loved a Boy and his Blob. Who knew Jelly beans were so powerful?
If you guys aren't familiar with Seanbaby, you'll find this hilarious:
NES deconstruction
I loved Adventure Island. I got really far with Dragon Warrior. I think my favorite game was Wheel of Fortune with the wierd Vanna who did the splits when reaching for the letters. I also loved Ducktales and Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers!
I just bought one of these (and paid double at a store here locally) and I love it. I have been buying a lot of games I had when I was a kid. It is so much fun.

Paperboy! Best. game. ever.
Dr. Mario, many wasted hours on that bad boy....and even recently too. I have friends who have an NES emulator on their playstation and we occasionally get drunk and play Dr. Mario for hours on end.
Excitebike was also greatness.
I loved all the Mario games, I am especially partial to number 2, but they're all great in their own right.
Contra.
Track and Field with the powerpad was pretty much the coolest thing ever.
I used to have an NES emulator on my computer so I could play all the old school games. I should really download that again. The connectors finally bit it on my original unit, one of these days I'll buy a replacement and put it in there.

Oh man, Track and Field brings back memories...especially considering our NES was set up in our basement where the ceiling was the LOWEST. Not so smart, as one neighbor kid found out.
Duck Hunt and the original Mario are the others I remember playing, they were a lot of fun.
Track and Field was great because when you played the long jump if you just jumped off the pad entirely you'd get a huge score. Come to think of it Track and Field was a great workout. If I started doing that four times a week I'm sure my ass would be rock hard in no time.
