Posted: 1/6/05 at 5:23pmInteresting thread! I'm going to Europe in April/May and I need your advice. I'm already doing a quick overview tour of Europe (London, Paris, Amsterdam or Brussels, likely Rhineland, Lucerne, Rome, Venice) and I'm trying to pick a regional tour to go on afterwards. The three tours I'm considering (from Insight tours) are a Britain tour that goes all around England, a bit of Wales, and Scotland; Italy & Sicily; or Normany and the Loire Valley. Which one of those 3 would you recommend?

Falling to my knees and thanking God for making the world so perfect--Super Paradise Beach, Mykonos.

Posted: 1/6/05 at 5:46pmI say flip a coin. You can't go wrong with either one, though I'd say you'd drink better in France, if you like wines (though it would have been more difficult to choose if you were doing Northern Italy). You'll probably get prettier people in Italy, in addition to more diverse aspects from all the different parts of Italy.

I'm very fortunate to be able to travel every summer. My favorite places are:
Venice, Italy
Vatican City, Italy
Florence, Italy
Siena, Italy
Kracow, Poland
Warsaw, Poland
Vienna, Austria
Innesbruk, Austria
Obberamergau, Germany
(Home of the famous Passion Play)
Prague, The Czech Republic
Budapest, Hungary
Glastonbury, England
London, England
Salisbury, England
Inverness, Scotland
Edinburgh, Scotland
Galway, Ireland
Jerusalem, Israel
Istanbul, Turkey
Brussels, Belgium
Bruges, Belgium
Paris, France
The Loire Valley, France
However, my most beloved spot in the world is my blessed little town located in the Pyrenees Mountains in France. I'm thinking of living there full time when I retire. Sigh!

I lived in Rome for awhile, and I loved it there.
I also really enjoyed London. The British people were a lot friendlier than I expected them to be. It's too bad that everything was so expensive there.

Posted: 1/6/05 at 6:53pmIt's expensive because of the exchange rate right? A friend told me her pasta ended up costing $50+ and her theatre tix $200+ after currency conversion!

Right now the dollar is extremely weak in Europe. My trip to Scotland this summer proved to be very expensive. Everything cost double.
The good news is that the dollar is starting to creep up a bit.
Brussels: charming, cobblestoned architecture. Gorgeous churches, a wonderful town square and mannikin piss.
Innesbruk: sensational medieval architecture. More cobblestone. glorious mountains.
Loire Valley: Incredibly gorgeous mansions. One actually spans the Loire River. Wonderful vineyards.
Yes, I've been to Tuscany. Several times, actually. Beautiful scenery. GREAT food! You could spend several days in Florence with its art museums. Michelangelo's "David" is there and there's a chapel where a mural of the Magi encircles the entire room. I'm having a brain fart and can't remember the artist of the name of the chapel. It'll come to me.
You should go to your local library and check their travel section. There are plenty of guidbooks and videos available there.

Posted: 1/6/05 at 6:59pmI only had the the chance to go to Europe when I was 12 and went to Spain. My favorite city there was Toledo and I found it to be quite charming. Toledo has a rich history of being a a Jewish city that was later taken over by Christians at the time of the Spanish Inquisition . There a traditional synagogues there and you can see where churches were built over them. The Jews of coursae either fled the area or were killed. Very similar to Fiddler On The Roof and Anetevka.

I have never been to Europe, but I will be on a plane to Warsaw in three weeks today.
I hear Warsaw (where I will be living) is very beautiful, as is Krakow. I have heard Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in the World.
My grandmother fled post-Hitler Holland, so I will be visiting her House in Den Hague. I'm sure I will love the Netherlands....

Is Britain the only country that doesn't use the Euro currency now? (I'm sure I could just google this to find out.)
I'm wondering how up to snuff my French needs to be for Paris. If the Parisians are anything like Quebecois, they get tres fache when visitors can't speak the language (or don't attempt to). And my French is at best conversational, with a lot of stuttering in between.

Although it has been a dream of mine for many years, I've never been to Europe. This summer, it is time.
(Speaking of time, what months are the best to go? I'm hoping for August-September-October.)

I've heard August can be blisteringly hot (esp. near the Mediteranean).
I'm going April/May.
