I've heard August can be blisteringly hot (esp. near the Mediteranean).
I'm going April/May.

I have also been lucky to have travelled to Europe every year in the last dozen years, and even before that. Last year I went on a two-week tour of the cities/towns on the Mediterranean coast ( from Madrid, Barcelona, Provence, The Cote D'Azur and Monte Carlo, Italian Riviera, and then Rome)...
There is so much to see in Europe --
Paris is definitely the most beautiful city, physically speaking( I have been there about 8 times), London is a place I visit every year not only for its old world charm but for the theatre ( and other interesting parts of England, Scotland and Wales), Provence and the Riviera is also one of my favourite spots ( I have been to Monaco about 7-8 times, the last two was for its most exciting weekend of the year - the Formula One Grand Prix weekend), parts of Italy from the lake region and Milan (I was there once for carnival time) to Venice to Florence ( and other Tuscan region parts like Sienna...sorry, I am rather sick of Pisa...) to Rome to the Naples area ( including Sorrento and Positano as well as Capri) are all great sites to visit... parts of France ( the Loire valley with their castles like Chenonceaux, the Biaritz and Lourdes areas, Lyon, areas north of Paris inclduing Monet's beautiful Giverny garden, etc) are as interesting as Paris...likewise, some wonderful cities and towns in Spain, including the coastal areas, parts of Scandinavia, Austria ( I have even done a tour of THE SOUND OF MUSIC
), Switzerland and Germany ( which I found actually more picturesque than the former), Greece and the Greek Islands ( I never thought I could literally climb up to the Delphi Oracle site)and parts of Turkey -- these are all wonderful places to visit, for historical significance, arts, architecture and culture, and even for their contemporary culture.
The only places I have not visited are Ireland, Portugal, eastern Europe and the Scandinavian peninsula ( I have been to Denmark, though).
The only problem is the current exchange rate between the US $ and the Euro. There was a time when the Euro was only about .88 to the US $ and the GBP ( pound) was so much less expensive ( $ 1.55 to the pound instead of the current $ 1.87)
Still - try to visit Europe at least once or twice and have a great time

Tiff: You'll be going at a good time. I believe the canadian dollar is actually pretty strong right now. For your sake, if that keeps up, you'll have a better exchange rate. Meanwhile, the US dollar is still pitiful and may prevent me from going abroad this year...
