Has anyone seen this yet?
Toying with getting tix, but would like to hear some audience reports first.
Yes, I saw this. There are few things I love more than SNL and the history of that show. It’s been a massive part of my life for pretty much my entire life. So unless this was just a total failure, I was never going to hate it. And I didn’t. I think there’s work that needs to be done here but nothing in this is unsalvageable.
The biggest and most urgent issue is the pacing. Act one needs to be so much quicker than it is. Way too many pauses in the dialogue and moments where characters stand around thinking or trying to decide something. Act one all about the first season and needs to (save for a few scenes) feel as frantic as that whole time was. Even act two which takes a more serious turn needs to feel more urgent. Not only would it help the pace of the show but it would make the more dramatic scenes really stand out when everything stops and they’re just done quietly. If I could offer any advice to this show, it would be that.
As for the cast, I really truly enjoyed what they’re doing with the characters. A few stand out more than the others but everyone is still finding their footing so it’s not fair to single them out here, yet. I’ll go back again though to see if this can progress. I hope they work on some of this stuff because while not perfect, I enjoyed it. And again - take these comments with a grain of salt because of my personal feelings about the source material.

I have to admit, I wasn't expecting good reviews for this, after Saturday Night got mostly panned. It turns out that expecting to get good critical reviews for a piece about something which has, historically, not gotten great critical reviews ITSELF is going to be a losing battle. This is a show where I'm much more concerned about the responses from the nerds, the theatre kids and the online commentariat.
