I probably would've had no interest in watching this film had they not filmed a few scenes in my office building. Glad I did watch it, I thought it was beautiful.

FAR FROM HEAVEN was my favorite film of 2002. Absolutely gorgeous. I watch it rather often now, and just the bravura cinematography of the opening frames is enough to put a tear in my eye. Julianne Moore deserved the Oscar; she's leaps and bounds better than Kidman, who was overrated and miscast as Woolf.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

I agree. It's a masterpiece. The control over all elements is masterful, the look, the feel, the cumulative impact of so much texture and detail. And its avoidance of camp. Even when it's funny, and harrowingly so (Quaid saying "you should see her when she hasn't put on her face") it's of a stylistic piece. Every component is throughtfully arranged, and the story is told in pure cinematic terms.

Watch the sequence where her scarf blows up over the house. The color scheme in that scene alone takes your breath away. The rhythm of the scenes moves use forward with a pace unheard of today -- every moment is full and loaded with emotional suspense, and yet the film never hurries. I watch it every autumn, too, and remain in awe. The movie was badly distributed (rather like LITTLE CHILDREN this year, which for some reason reminds me of it, though not in style). It should've been on huge screens -- like the 50s -- but was mostly relegated to art house mini-auditorims. I'd kill to see it on a big canvas.

Here's something I just realized...

There are strong similarities to both this film and the movie KIDS IN THE HALL: BRAIN CANDY. They both handle the closeted-homosexual-male subplot somewhat similarly.

Nothing left to be said here, so I'll just add that Far From Heaven is possibly my favorite movie of all time. Every frame is stunningly crafted, beautiful to look at, and a joy to hear.

As far as Oscars are concerned, I would have it down in the following categories...

Best Picture*
Best Director*
Best Actress*
Best Supporting Actor (Quaid)
Best Supporting Actress (Clarkson)
Best Original Screenplay*
Best Original Score*
Best Cinematography*
Best Art Direction
Best Costume Design*

Alas, the film ended up with 4 noms and 0 wins. Stupid Academy...

I think another cool thing about this movie that nobody really takes into account is that every small role is filled by an actor that knows how to make an impression with only a few minutes of screentime.

My three favorite movies of 2002 were Adaptation, Far From Heaven, and Y Tu Mama Tambien.

Julianne Moore for Far From Heaven, Diane Lane for Unfaithful, and Maggie Gyllenhaal for Secretary, I felt, were much superior than Nicole Kidman in The Hours.

Would you consider FFH to be a cult film?

It may become one eventually.

If they have art house screenings that sell out, fan sites devoted to it, or some other display of "cult-like devotion," then yes.

I've got it! Sing-Along Far From Heaven!!!

Todd Haynes is certainly a "cult" filmmaker, isn't he?

"Far From Heaven" is a masterpiece, IMO. I love how deceptively experimental it is. and yeah, the acting is just perfection. Viola Davis was particular fantastic as the housekeeper.

Julianne Moore's performance in FFH is extraordinary! She is so....natural, so luminous, so beautiful! What she does in this film, is what all actors strive for.......an absolutely, perfect performance!

I was so disappointed that she didn't win The Oscar...loosing to Nicole Kidman in "The Hours." Julianne had won pretty much every acting award before The Oscars. Many considered Nicole's win to be a "make up" award since she was the odds on favorite to have won in the previous year for "Moulin Rouge" - loosing to Halle Berry.

I absolutely love this film.

Short side story, when it was first released in NYC, it was only in two theaters. I was living about 45 minutes outside the city then but I LOVE Julianne Moore so I went in the first night to see it. It was sold out for two shows when I arrived so I went to buy a ticket but was told they didn't take credit cards and I had forgotten my ATM card. Finally, I convinced a street vendor who accepted credit cards to sell me something and give me cash back so I could buy the ticket. It was a total pain but once I saw the film, it was all worth it. Wonderful film. Brilliant acting by Julianne Moore.
