The first movie that came to mind mind was Les Choristes, but almostxfamous beat me to it. One of the best films I've ever seen in French or ENglish. The acting & singing is beautiful.
We saw 2 great movies lately a great german one Summersturm, a very moving and often funny coming of age movie about a 2 guys who grow and how their lives changed when they participate in a summer camp with their local crew club.
The other one was a belgian movie Twin sisters, about 2 sisters who get torn apart during childhood and both grow up in different countries and backgrounds during world war 2. And finally meet up again after 70 year, i guess i never ever cried that much during a movie as with this one.

Ooh, MrMidwest, *I* want to see that one!
Les Choristes really is beautiful, another definite recommendation right here.
I'll also third Au Revoir Les Enfants...it's heartbreaking, and I fell completely in love with the leads by the end. I also recall the older brother being gorgeous, but I don't think that affects CapnHook.
Anything Gerard Depardieu, if you want to go a bit more light-hearted.
La Belle et La Bete...so creepy, I love it.
They're all French, but they're all great.
Foreign Films:
The Red Violin
Wings of Desire
all my other choices have already been called out.
Documentaries:
The Little Fugitive (doc/film)
A Boy's Life
The NDI documentary about J. D'Amboise's dance troupe (can't find the name of the film)
I second the vote for Spellbound and add Wordplay as another funny doc full of quirky real-life characters.

I recommend "Promises" as both an excellent foreign film and documentary. It's about children caught up in the Israeli and Palestinian conflict. For a good description: http://www.offoffoff.com/film/2001/promises.php3>.
Deepa Mehta's "Elements" trilogy (Fire, Earth, Water) is excellent.
I also recommend "Banlieue 13", a French film featuring the urban dance/martial art parkour. The movie not going to end up on any greatest films list, but the stunts are amazing, especially when you realize that they're performed without wires! It puts "The Matrix" to shame!

Ever wonder why Theatre and the Arts are important? Ever wonder if Theatre can REALLY touch lives beyond just entertaining?

I cried when I saw this film.
Rent any of Pedro Almodóvar's films:
-All About My Mother
-Bad Education
-Volver
-Talk to Her
-etc...
They are all completely stunning.
