Former NBA Player Tim Hardaway "Hates Gay People"

I have that much faith in America's acceptance of the people within their own country.
I'm glad you do. As someone who grew up in the South, I'm very often surprised at the sources of acceptance I find during my visits there, such as when I went to my high school reunion this year.
But the vast majority are still quite unpleasant and backward. The Klan's making a comeback, you know. And to lildogs' point, most of them would feel the same way about Hardaway as they would about me.

Homophobia is not going to go away. Sad to say but it is true. Not without some of our socalled leaders showing some balls of courage to call out such hatred.
Obama and Hillary will keep their mouths shut; consider Hill's dubious sexuality it is sad.

"Isn't he allowed to have his own opinion like everyone else does? I did read part of the article. Maybe what he should've said that he doesn't agree with what they do . In this country we're supposed to have free speech, reguardless wether we agree or disagree with whatever the topic or issue may be."
Can someone please remind me why I bother?

"I have also met him in person, and I find him to be quite funny actually. Arrogant and often misinformed, but still funny."

Don't knock my love of basketball, papa. I own the cast recording of "Promises, Promises" and once saw a Sprite commercial with Grant Hill.
Speaking of Grant Hill, he made some very supportive comments in the wake of the big coming out of what's-his-face.

He's fine with that, but if a white person where to go on record saying how much they hated black people, it would be World War Three.

Ah, the whiny "free speech means we can say whatever we want" response. Let's look at the false assumptions underlying that statement:
1. That the First Amendment trumps everything else in constitutional law. Wrong.
2. That being allowed to say what you want means being allowed to say it without being criticized. Wrong again.
3. That the First Amendment regulates postings on a privately run message board. Wrong!
4. That "can" is the same thing as "should". Incorrect!
5. That all opinions expressed are somehow sancrosanct if the speaker really believes in them. False! There is such a thing as right and wrong, and the fact that people disagree on morality doesn't negate its existence or its importance.
Well, this has been fun. Hardaway and some white-hooded Klan representative can go on a roadshow of idiocy together.

I love the "First Amendment" knee-jerk response.
I more recently saw it in a situation where a school told a kid that he couldn't wear a Confederate Flag T-shirt to school (in Alvin, Texas, of course). There was a big uproar in the community, with people saying the school was restricting free speech.
Uh -- then no dress code would fly at any school, fools.

In a way, I *almost* get the Confederate flag argument.
Almost. There is something to be said for banning a shirt - unless it has foul language or an adult "theme" on it.
however, given the Confederate flag's recent connotations - both sides pretty much do agree it's about the same thing in many respects - it's inflammatory, worn to be rude, and is therefore inappropriate for school.
Shirts proclaiming membership in PFLAG and the like, however, are not meant to be exclusionary but rather to create dialogue about acceptance and should not even be comparable.

Students don't really have free speech, anyway. They can't swear in their yearbooks quotes, write articles about teen abortions in school newspapers, or wear tube tops to class, to give a few obvious examples. Legally, school speech is still a bit of a messy area, but right now the Supreme Court precedent actually leans a bit alarmingly to the regulatory side. A school would be well within its legal rights to ban Confederate flag shirts.
But back to Tim Hardaway. Isn't he a delight?

Cal--can you offer any insight into Texas' love of the Confederate flag?
I don't know why a "patriotic" state like Texas would so lovingly embrace a symbol of treason.

Hell, Texas used to be its own country, and there are a lot of Texans (and non-Texans, for that matter) who wished it would stay that way. That's why they fly the state flag at the same level as the national flag, unlike everywhere else.
Would Tim Hardaway play on the same team as someone who wore a Confederate flag T-shirt in high school? 'Cause I bet he hates homos, too. Kind of like the black preacher who said he'd march alongside the Klan if it was to stand against gay marriage (a preacher really said that). Strange bedfellows, indeed.

I'm not surprised by that kind of statement. Today, TEH GAY, as Pam Spaulding says, is really that last great bastion of unity-forming hate for people who have absolutely nothing in common except living in the same country.

All I can say is the various comments regarding this story -- not here, of course, but on message boards with a less intelligent target audience -- has really diminished my faith in this country's people. It's absolutely sickening. Go to the ESPN board, or to that CBS thing I linked earlier and read the comments. Then try to keep down your lunch.
If nothing else, it justifies the utter contempt I have for a majority of Americans (present company excluded, of course).
