who else is disgusted by this commercial?
I am only disgusted that they show it that way and they think that if two guys hug or are excited to see the each other, they are gay.
what do you think?
I've always been disgusted by people who felt that Frodo and Sam were lovers. That is SO not how Tolkein wrote it.
Some people just can't comprehend a heterosexual friendship with love that runs that deep. Makes me sad.
It was obviously a joke, but I can see how people would be offended. It definitely wasn't PC.
People mistake Shamey and me for lovers all the damn time.
It's because of all those pictures you keep leaking to the press.
I don't know why they can't see the deep platonic love.
Does everything have to be about sex in this crazy world??
It's just sad.
it annoys the hell out of me. glad I'm not the only one.
As a recovering LOTR geek, this is one of my pet peeves.
You're not supposed to be in this thread, Kitz. It's Step 4.
I think you guys might be taking it a little too seriously.
UTA: I just realized this whole thread is probably a joke, so disregard that. Sorry!

not as good as the joke from the oc, something like this, not sure of it's right, but as close as I could remember
Melissa to Summer "remember that movie about the two gay guys on the mountain?"
Summer "Lord of the rings?"
Melissa "yeah,..."

Now, don't take this as gospel, but I do recall reading an interview with Sean Astin where he reported that Ian McKellen pulled him aside and enlightened him as to the subtle gay undertones the Frodo/Sam relationship that had developed over the years. It was during the filming of "Fellowship," and it came up when Sam was to visit Frodo after the attack at Weathertop and Sam rushes to Frodo's bedside and holds his hand.
Wait...we ARE joking right?
People really aren't offended, are they?
I'm offended because, as high-profile hobbits, Frodo and Sam could have done so much for the homosexual hobbit community if they'd just come out.
I mean, given how the Dark Forces of Mordor waged such a smear campaign against Frodo's Bachelor uncle, Bilbo, and the possible incestuous relationship between Frodo and Bilbo...well, you'd think they would have realized the important ramifications in coming out.
The hobbits?! Gosh, is nothing sacred anymore?
What?
Hobbits don't have sex? Where do little Hobbits come from then? The Hobbit Stork...a creature much like the stork we as humans know and love...but smaller.
Sure they do. :)
I was kidding, mostly. I'm not really offended. It's just weird when like, widely beloved characters are suddenly dubbed gay just 'cause they're guys and they hang out and if that (probably) was not the writer's intention.
I think you'd be hard-pressed NOT to see the sexual undertones in a LOT of Frodo and Sam's relationship but Tolkien himself didn't intend it to be anything but an example of the batman relationship from the British army.
But still, it's kind of homoerotic in a lot of places.
In the movie, I agree that it's obvious where people draw that implication from -- they're a bit effeminate. But in the book? It's been a long time since I read LOTR (and admittedly only the first one), but I didn't sense that.
That's the thing...it's not such a new theory. It existed long before the movies were ever made.
Maybe I just had a pure mind when I read the book.
Really, Emcee? I'm reading Fellowship right now (it's a tradition that I read the Hobbit through Return of the King every year or so).
Here's a passage I JUST read last night:
"At that moment there was a knock on the door, and Sam came in. He ran to Frodo and took his left hand, awkwardly and shyly. He stroked it gently and then he blushed and turned hastily away."
Nothing? Not a thing just a trifle...off...about that to you?
