Ack. Again, I'm not a LOTR geek or anything (
) but Frodo and Bilbo are cousins, not uncle and nephew...
And I wonder if any of you saw the "Brokeback" parody online? That one was disgusting.

In general, I think it does sort of bother me that an affectionate relationship between two men is often automatically categorized as a gay one even if it's not.
I'm also bothered when there's a picture of two male celebs hanging out and tons of gay guys are suddenly screaming that they're gay. I think it feeds into the straight fear that gay men want all straight men to be gay.
Ideally it'd be great if most straight guys didn't care if people thought they were gay, but I think when some gay men make such a big thing out of any affection between two men as meaning that they're gay, there's more apprehension about being comfortable with homosexuality. Of course it's not just gay men who make a big deal out of affection between men, though.
I'm reminded of that commercial from a while back where a bunch of guys are watching sports and there's a touch down or something and one guy hugs one of the other guys and then all of the other guys move away from the offending hugger.

Yup! That's the passage McKellen referred to to Astin. Now, was there a "gay" message there? Decide for yourself. Obviously, McKellen thought there was, and he urged Astin to keep that possibility in mind as Sam was to rush in and grasp Frodo's hand. McKellen thought there was a portion of the LOTR fans who believed, like he did, that the message was there if you wanted it to be, and that they'd really want to see it portrayed, however subtly. Or in the case of Jackson's direction, however unsubtly. It is no stretch to imagine McKellen had the same conversation with Jackson in regards to the entire Frodo/Sam relationship.
I think TBS is just trying to be snarky and clever with editing. The out-of-context "look" from Gandalf at the end of the spot still cracks me up.
At least they aren't doing lame, tired "Brokeback" jokes.

i know people think this is a joke thread or what not, but I really am offended by it. I think they have no right to make a commercial from the movie to show that there could be signs of homosexual tension between Frodo and Sam right after Brokeback comes out.
and i know that there is evidence from the book that backs it up, but still. I don't think that was the whole point of the movie.

What exactly are you offended by, Dre? If anything, it's just more humor at the expense of the one margin group that it's still permissable to make fun of. You certainly wouldn't see Sam and Frodo in black face.

Someday, someone is gonna have to tell me just what is so icky about sex (or, well, gay sex) that it becomes an offense to imply that any two men might be having a homosexual relationship.

I'm not saying that I find gay sex "icky" or that I don't agree that two men should be together. Cause I have plenty of friends who are gay and I am totally fine with it.
I'm just offened that they take a movie that almost everyone knows and makes a joke about the sexual of the hobbits. If I was a gay man, i would be offened by that. I don't think it's funny.
And i find a lot of gay humor funny. Just, not this one.

To Robb: I'm sorry, but that is just plain rude.
I have opinions and I am expressing them. There is nothing wrong in doing that.
And I will never shut up, like you want me to.

Well, now, see, THAT's what I wanted to know, Dre. You're not offended that it's a joke at the expense of gays, you're offended that these heterosexual F-ing Hobbits are being made out to look gay.
I'm so glad you have plenty of gay friends and are fine with it. I hope they are fine with your heterosexuality and are even ok with it.

Posted: 4/11/06 at 2:37pmi felt that the entire movie was a piece of propaganda from the religious right. these two men who care deeply about one another on a quest to destroy a ring? obviously it's saying that the gays are out to destroy marriage.

sorry, dre, but i don't use j/k or sign my name with hearts over the i's.
two things to remember:
1. this is a message board, not life, don't take it seriously.
2. i am just a person on a message board; never take ME seriously.

are you offeneded that it is a joke at the expanse of gays? and why should heterosexual hobbits be made to look gay? it seems like people are making fun of guys who are straight. and I don't think that is right.
Robb: oh don't worry, I never will take you seriously.

Been listening to the cries of the Religious Right being marginalized much, Dre?
A. It's a joke.
B. I think it's funny because it's based on the writing, of which MANY moments come off with homosexual intent.
C. I was trying to clarify if you were offended as a gay man or as a fanboy who was "offended" by something he likes being gayified (which completely nullifies your "I have friends who are gay" caveat).

you're taking something that is a joke and trying to be logical about it. sometimes a banana is just a banana. i'm not offended by the ad as a gay man and i don't think the parody implies anything of the sort you are asking.
you are certainly entitled to your opinion if you did not find it funny but i think you are making it more than it is or was intended to be.
