So I'm seeing the ads for this movie. They feature several "jokes" that just aren't funny. At all. Not one thing in the ad makes me laugh or think "Oooh, THAT I want to see!"
Is it some post-modern joke or is it an ironic title or what?

this movie looks a little more serious than Judds other stuff, but i have a feeling that i'm not going to like the change in pace.
in response to theaterdork about the hangover, YES it is that funny. one of the funniest movies i have ever seen. it's up there with anchorman and 40 year old virgin.

Posted: 7/29/09 at 11:23amIt looks painfully unfunny, and it looks like it wants to be a "serious" comedy. I can't really stand Judd Apatow, especially his views on men and women (which Phyllis perfectly explained). I also think Adam Sandler's time has passed. I'll be skipping this one.

I'm intrigued by this movie because I love most of the cast...so hopefully it's awesome. I actually love Adam Sandler when he plays a role with a lot of heart...this appears to maybe be that way. I LOVED him in Spanglish.
And yes...The Hangover is toooootally really that funny. It's ridiculous! :)

I was so-so on Knocked Up but laughed a couple of times. It was difficult to watch and I didn't like ANY of the characters in it.
"Are you mad you died at the end of Die Hard" is inexplicably un-funny. "Is Harry going for his Ph D in Wizardry?" is just flat out stupid- and those are the jokes they feature in the AD.

I will admit, I like Seth Rogan and Adam Sandler (even though 95% of Adam Sandler movies are the same), but Jonah Hill is just annoying. I hate that Harry Potter line and the Die Hard one? that actor, Alexander Godunov, is actually dead, so I found that a bit offensive.

Phyllis, I saw KNOCKED UP at the movies and then again on a bus ride. You're right that watching it with an audience is different. I didn't think it was hilarious by any means, but I did laugh at some of it. When I saw it on that bus, with most everyone asleep, I couldn't believe the kind of movie it is. Particularly the Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann storyline is insanely absurd, unlikable, and plain sexist. I also think that Seth Rogen plays the exact same part in every movie he does, and I don't think it's a funny part he plays. "A drama about a bunch of nasty people who are really nasty to each other" is a good way to describe it.
Joe, I couldn't agree more about the stupid lines they used for the trailer. I mean, the Jonah Hill line about Harry Potter is so so so dumb. When the previews are painfully unfunny, I can't imagine how the movie actually is.

Posted: 7/29/09 at 12:42pmI thought "Knocked Up" tried too hard and majority of it wasn't funny. "40 Year Old Virgin," to me, isn't as funny as everyone else thinks it is. It's funny but not HILARIOUS.

Yeah! A throwaway line about an iconic movie is so offensive.

I have a friend who saw a screening of this film last night. He considers himself a Judd Apatow fan but he really hated this movie.
His main complaints were:
-The length, 2 hours and 20 minutes for a story that could have been told in half that
-Most of the actors played essentially the same roles as they played in "Knocked Up"
-Horrible screenwriting
