I am in the market for a GOOD, reliable and reasonably priced mp3 player.
I'd like one that has a screeen and you can see the list of songs and it says what it's playing when it's playing etc.
I am kind of looking at anything but an ipod, but that's because I've heard horror stories, and they are reallllly expensive. But I'd love to hear any and all opinions. =)

I have never heard one bad thing about Creative Zens.
I have a few horror stories about my iPod Mini, but I'll spare you considering they've been replaced.
Never heard of them.
Me either. But that's a pretty good cue to go and check these suckers out.
And if Zepka says so, then it must be true. eh?
um, duh
no, i haven't had any problems with mine and it's easy to use.
I don't know what horror stories you've heard about iPods but if a person can't operate one, then, IMO, they would pretty much have to be an idiot and if there is a mechanical problem with it, they will replace it for you. Plus there are so many variations in models and price to say that they are "so expensive". Prices can run from under $100 to $499, depending on what you want.
I think that at the end of the day it's still by far the best mp3 player on the market and if you ever intend to use the iTunes music store it's a perfect fit. I have nothing against the other mp3 players out there but there is a logical reason as to why the iPod is as popular as it is. Thats my 2 cents.
thanks pab. :) One vote for iPod.
This is exactly the sort of info I'm after, thanks everyone.
I have a Creative Zen as well, and it is indeed an excellent player. The battery runs for 24 hours, which is definitely longer than the other players. And I like that it supports WMA files, it takes up less space than MP3s.

eponine there are SO many threads on this, you may want to do a search to get more opinions.......I will never buy anything but another Toshiba Gigabeat. I love it
http://www.gigabeat.com/
I believe it's the only one where you hook it up to your computer, and you stick a cd in the puter, and it goes through your computer (not downloaded to it) and downloads on the gigabeat itself.
I have the gigabeat 40....
I got a Zen, returned it, got something else, returned it, and LOVE this.....
I shall second the Zen and the gigabeat, and I'd also like to throw in a vote for the Dell DJ and the iRiver. I've, at one point or another, owned all of them, and my current favorite is my new iRiver. It's like having an entire other computer in your pocket...I use it for everything from music (of course), to taking my Powerpoint and Excel files home from the office to work on them, reupload them, and bring them back for presentation.
of course, you could also be a sheep and get an iPod :-P
Ba-aa-aa-aa-h! I am a proud iPod carrying sheep.
I've never had any problems with either of our iPods (other than running out of space) and I really love the interface on the iTunes software.
I'll add my vote for the Creative Zen. I have the 6GB Micro, which I've heard they discontinued, but the 8GB is just as good.

I've had the 8GB Creative Zen Micro Photo since November and I love it. The battery life is incredible (12 hours on a charge), the controls are simple (I love the touchpad), the color display is beautiful(Great for pictures) and the size is just right( Just barely bigger than a Ipod nano, but smaller than the 4th gen Ipod). It is a great combination of features, size and quality.

It seems as if people are trying to avoid metioning ipods on this thread.
Personally I think they're the best mp3 players around and iTunes is so easy to use.
That could be because the original request said "I am kind of looking at anything but an iPod" therefore that could account for the lack of iPod mentions. I went against the trend and did post about the iPod because I also think that it's by far the best mp3 player on the market and easy to use but to each his/her own.

but the "kinda" makes all the difference... fine I missed that sentence, are you happy now!?!
Anyways aren't Creative Zen's just as expensive as iPods?

I also have a Creative Zen. Got it cause I hate iPods and it also has a radio. With a good charge, it keeps going and going and going.
