Well, at least they put their crap in writing. Of course, there's little or no detail, no actual plan. But there are plenty of pictures of old, white folks, and pictures of the Statue of Liberty and Mount Rushmore, and pictures of small towns, so that must mean something.

And they do want to repeal the evil healthcare bill, but that's OK, because deregulation solves everything, right? The free market will make sure those benevolent insurers treat their customers with compassion. It's worked in the past, right?

Can anyone point to one place where this deviates from Bush's policies? You know, the ones that got us into this mess.

The Dems should have a field day with this, and if they don't they deserve to lose. And if the American people actually buy this load of crap, then we deserve what we get.
Load of crap

i'd like to think that Americans are too smart to fall for this crap again ("Contract with America", anyone?), but um, well...i can't.

We can't say we haven't been warned. And there's no doubt that they mean everything they say, and that they will do everything they promise to do.

Unlike our Fierce Advocate.

Has anyone - like someone on this board or someone they know - actually benefited from the health care bill?

Not sure if it's related to it or not, but the company I worked for recently did a health coverage audit...we had to supply documentation that the people we covering (partner, son and daughter in my case) were real, live human beings. And if we didn't get it in by a set date, they were off our coverage in 30 days.

"Has anyone - like someone on this board or someone they know - actually benefited from the health care bill?"

Provisions of the health care bill are set to go into effect today, like children being eligible for coverage on their parents' health care plans until age 26, for example, which I'm sure is going to affect a lot of people.

But nobody's going to be getting that Public Option thing that Our Fierce Advocate was so Fiercely Advocating for.

I keep hearing about free preventative care, but no further explanation of that. I have a hunch that less people are going to benefit from the so-called healthcare reform than we're being told. Much like the mortgage aid program.

And the GOP has its way, nobody will ever benefit from anything ever.

The majority of the health care reform doesn't begin until 2014.

....but the world goes 'round

Taz is quite right. 2014, two years into President Palin's administration, which will give the GOP and the Dems plenty of time to have it all dismantled before it even goes into effect.

What amused me about this "pledge" was that it was developed (through extensive polling- really) to counter the idea that Republicans are just the "Party of No"- against whatever it is that the Democrats do.

And yet it is entirely reactionary- The Democrats passed health care reform? We'll repeal it. They bailed out the auto industry? We'll end that. They did a stimulus? We'll block it.

Actually, I think some of the changes to healthcare kick in today, because it's six months since the bill was signed. I think it's the end to recisions for children, removing the lifetime benefit limit, and raising the age for dependent children to 26. There are probably more, but that's all I can recall.

"Other provisions will also become effective Thursday that, among other things, ban lifetime benefit caps, require no-cost preventive medical services such as mammograms, and begin to close the so-called "doughnut hole" for seniors on federal prescription drug plans."

It also stops insurers from ending coverage or denying coverage because of a "preexisting condition."

Yeah. All those things that Republicans fought so hard against.

Is a physical considered preventative? Will people be able to get those?

I guess I'll feel better when I start hearing people actually benefit from it.

Just another list of "what" they're going to do...without even a suggestion of exactly "how" they intend to accomplish it.

I'm so tired of politicians...both Republican and Democrat who do little or nothing more than offer the same tired BS in the form of stump speeches and "pledges".

Yes, President Obama, I'm looking at you too.

Phyllis, I don't understand. How would people not benefit from having these reforms?

In case folks are too young to remember the "Contract With America" here's an amusing piece written by a staunch right-winger 6 years after the Contract who rants that the damn thing didn't work, never worked and, as he points out, the "Party of fiscal responsibility (Republicans)" consistently approved bigger budgets than were requested by the "Tax n spend democratic president" and the programs the Contract promised to eliminate actually grew by 13%.

I know, Roscoe, it's inconceivable! I can only speak from personal experience, but when I tried to seek help (multiple times) on my effed up mortgage I just got a lot of runaround and red tape and no actual help whatsoever I can only imagine when my pre-existing condition presents itself should I have to change insurance that I'm gonna get a lot of runaround and red tape.

Of course it goes without saying that no, I don't think the Republicans are any better, but I think I'm finally at a point where I'm a member of a political party simply because it beats the alternative.

But seriously, what does preventive care mean? Does that mean someone without insurance can get a check up?

Will they cut their healthcare benefits and pay 100% of the premiums?

Will they cut their salaries and per diems and disallow monetary access to campaign funds?

Will they cut their office staffs both in number and in salary?

Will they pay for fringe benefits like a gym and parking?

Will military weapons systems that do not work be ended?

What about corporate welfare? Companies thrive and people starve.

Will the lot of them just shut the flock up?

Point taken Phyllis. Insurance companies will, of course, do everything in their power to screw it all up.
