Has anyone been watching it on HBO? Did you catch Sunday nights episode. It was breath taking. I have also read the books and so far it is completely faithful to the books
It has not been 100% faithful to the books and the tiny pieces I noticed really bugged me. Drogo did NOT rape Dany on their wedding night. I don't understand the point of that change.
By book 3 it is implied that *SPOILER* the Knight of Flowers was heartbroken over Stannis's death, but there was never actual mention of them having a relationship in the books unless I missed it.
There was another scene where something happened and the wrong person either said it or did it. I can't remember, but it must not have been too significant.
The three scenes of gratuitous sex have annoyed me, but that seems to be the pattern. Greyjoy and the redheaded prostitute, Stannis and the Night of Flowers and Littlefinger and the two prostitutes... Distract the viewer with nudity and blatant sexuality while filling you in on the information and back story they don't have time to show on screen. It's pretty clever.
Otherwise, it's been pretty damn breathtakingly accurate, straight down to the emotions on the actor's faces. Catelyn grabbing the assassin's blade with her bare hand really effected me in the book and they were able to bring it to screen beautifully. The casting is superb. Cat's sister was supposed to be a great beauty in her day, though. I can't imagine her ever being beautiful. I also think Cersei should be more beautiful. Maybe her evil shines through too much for me. lol
I can't WAIT to see how they pull off this final episode or how they do the crap that's coming in the next books. I am only 1/2 way through book 3.

I've been watching the series and enjoying it a good deal, a rattling good multi-plot saga. The only reason I can think of for the change in Drogo's Wedding Night Technique is that it gives the filmmakers an opportunity to dramatize Daenarys' growing influence on him, as she demonstrates to him that there's more to sex than the old in-out in-out.

No, but he did rape her a ton AFTER her wedding night, which tends to get forgotten in the strange romanticism of their first night together. I was really pissed about this change at first, but I think they wanted to give Dany a longer time to develop that sense of independence, so that she wasn't just suddenly and fully complying with this random marriage her brother arranged out of nowhere.

Your mixing up Stannis and Renly. Loras and Renly DID have a relationship: it's never explicitly stated, but it's really strongly hinted, and GRRM has confirmed it. We're just never in either of their heads for a POV chapter to really get into it, but there are plenty of hints.
I'm generally loving the series a lot. I haven't read the books in years, which generally means I can only remember enough to recognize REALLY BIG changes, which have been, like—one. (I could remember Dany/Drogo's wedding night.) Tyrion is AMAZING.

i was wondering where the love for this series on this board was.
there seems to be so much anticipation and hope on this board for the narnia series, which is basically very thinly veiled christian propaganda (the worst was in the second movie, when the youngest sister shrilly enjoined her elder brother that his faculties were not enough, he had to have faith in aslan).
i think you mean renly, jerseygirl (robert's younger brother).
*spoilers*
actually, there are hints throughout the first two books that both are homosexual. renly and loras are both loved by the women at court for being handsome and always being the best dressed (bit of a cliche, i know). renly chooses a rainbow cloak to dress his honor guard (hard to get more obvious than that, it must be said). when renly goes off to "pray," loras insists on joining him. when stannis and renly treat, and renly boasts that margaery is coming to him a maid, stannis replies, "in your bed, she's like to stay that way." and when loras offers to train tommen, cersei mentally notes that he is no sort of man for little boys to be emulating. i'm sure there's more.
*end spoilers*
in other words, martin writes homosexuals into the story as it should be done: NO BIG DEAL (in fact, renly would indeed have made a fine king, and loras was routinely acknowledged to be highly lethal in combat, except by the viper of dorne, who himself was acknowledged to be bisexual, i believe). whereas tolkien and lewis, had they bothered, would likely have made gay characters evil or incompetent, or some combination thereof, with the other extreme of the spectrum, mercedes lackey overly romanticizing it.
I too was also wondering why a thread hasn't been started.I haven't spoiled anything for any of my friends who are non readers and it has been difficult. I really think Sean Bean and Peter Dinkelage deserve Emmy's especially for the last episode. The little things that are different I can get behind because the haven't really changed the story. Yes the sex is a bit much but it did help hide certain revelations. I wonder who they will get to play Stannis next season and Theon's dad Balor. Did anyone notice that was Filtch from Harry Potter playing W. Frey? And Tonks is Osha (the wilding girl who is a Winterfell now)
JerseyGirl book 3 is my favorite...it has a lot of Holy Crap revelations...I didn't think that was possible after reading book 2 but it is..my favorite chapter is Sansa's last POV chapter, I read that end of that chapter breathlessly...also the Red Wedding blew my mind and I had to take a break from reading it and also I started to really enjoy Jamie's character from his POV chapters, also Jon Snow really comes into his own.I have started reading book 4 it is ok so far, nothing like Storm of Swords, no Danry or Jon Snow chapters. I heard that the writers are probaly going to divide book 3 into two seasons because the book is jammed pack with action and also book 5 is coming out in July and they can't get too far ahead of GRRM
Also did you see this Sean Bean is really awesome..he got stabbed in a bar brawl defending a lady
bad ass
I always mix up Renly and Stannis...lol. I think the story would have been better had they kept it more subtle.
As for the rapes after the wedding, it was never by force, but in the traditional Dothraki way that was painful for Dany. I just got that there was a tenderness in Drogo from the beginning that greatly increased.
Yeah, I just this second read the double whammy WHOA! moment that happened thanks to Lord Frey in book three. wtf?!
OK, I am only about 1/2 way through the third book...
Now I am a scared ...
Yeah the second half of book 3 is breathe taking and you either just want to keep reading or throw the book across the room...It is not for the faint of heart
Just finished that chapter. I actually checked ahead to make sure a wee one survived (I was not clear based upon the way it ended).
I kind of figured this would happen when I heard the major players in Book 5 were Jon, Daeneys (sp) and Tyrion.
But DAMN...
NOTHING BUT BOOK 3 SPOILERS:
I am shocked by how far Frey went. I guess I am just annoyed because getting the children back to their home was already impossible and getting them to their mother had almost become a comedy of errors. Not that's also an impossibility. That was a LOT of lead up with no payoff. lol I think it would have been interesting to see Catelyn react to Jon Snow being the heir of Winterfell, which is no more.
AND for those reading along, I have a question. I tend to get excited when the crazy is happening and sometimes miss important points. Was Jon Snow in the same place Bran was when he left the Wildlings? It seemed to be described the same. I am assuming the direwolf was Summer that came to his rescue. I just got a little confused by the Wildlings being South of the wall and Bran being so close to the wall.
Spoilers:
I thought that Bran was on the island (which they accessed by the causeway) and while not face to face, in the same general area. Jon things Bran is still dead.

Thats what I thought as well
Yes, that's what I assumed. I can't wait to see what comes next. I was reading in class today. Bad Swede!
Hell, I had to read Eddard's little haircut three times before I accepted that it actually happened. These books are going to end me. He is so good at leaving every chapter a cliffhanger. At the end of each, I just want that story to continue.
Yeah I skipped lunch to pack up my classroom very fast so I could sit here and read till it is time to go home....I need to finish book 4 to get ready for book 5
Okay, so book four is everyone but Snow, Dany and Tyrion. Then those three are followed in Dance of Dragons. If those are the same book with divided chapters, why is it taking so long to get the books out? Dragons was supposed to come out 5 years ago. I have read Feast is disappointing and soap opera-y. Thoughts?
Still reading Feast and I agree not as good as Sword. I heard that Dragon is as long as Swords and he was having a tough time editing what he wanted to put in it. I also read an interview where he said as soon as Dragon comes out he is starting to write book 6. I also think now that the show is on it will add pressure to write for him. I am glad I didn't start the books till the show came out because 5 years is way too long to wait
Question In the peview for this sunday it shows Catelynn confronting Jamie...did that happen in book 1? I don't remember...I remember in book 3 her confronting him and asking abot what happened to Bran (or was that book 2?)

the main problem with feast for crows is that it adds many points of views that are unnecessary, and needlessly drags out the story. and unlike with jaime, martin doesn't really succeed at making cersei sympathetic--she truly comes off as liking to scheme, but not being very good at it.
catelyn's confrontation with jaime does not occur until clash of kings.
Oh yeah, "Brienne, give me your sword!" HA! I love these damn books. I am glad I started recently, too. Who knows how long we will have to wait for 6.
Just finished the 3rd book.
And read the teaser for the 4th book.
WOW.
I am liking Jamie more and more.
On to book 4 this weekend.
I am now 85% through book 3 and Jaime just had his moment of realizing his future was up to him. Very well written.

in general, most of the books are very well written. much more so than tolkien, actually (who, by his own confession, was primarily a linguist, and was more interested in creating languages than in writing prose).
They just announced season 2 will begin filming in Belfast next month.

if possible, they should up the number of episodes to allow the story to breath a little.
I think they already confirmed they're sticking with 10 episodes next season as well.
