Has it Ever Happened?
Has a gay person ever been nominated?
There are NO gay movie stars, which is fine, but it would be interesting to know if there has ever been...other than Rock Hudson, who was not really an actor.
skingdom out.

Posted: 3/29/07 at 8:46amWell, Sir Ian McKlellen has been up for one twice. Off the top of my head, nothing acting wise is coming to me...but I could be wrong.

The first actor was probably Charles Laughton way back in about 1932 or so.
The first actress was rumored to be Janet Gaynor, the very first Best Actress winner in 1927. Her BFF was Mary Martin, but nothing can be absolutely confirmed because I wasn't there. However this is one of those tales that is taken as gospel.

Was this Alan Ball maybe? I completely don't remember his speech, but he did win for writing American Beauty, and his is the first name I thought of when I read this for some reason.
ETA: or maybe Bill Condon?

When the late Howard Ashman won for Best Song (Beauty and the Beast), his lover at the time of his death accepted for him.
His opening line was along the lines of "Howard and I had a home and a life together..."

Actually, a gay actor HAS won an Oscar...Sir John Gielgud. Now...it can be debated how 'out' he was...here is a snippet of a bio about him:
He was convicted of persistently importuning for immoral purposes (cottaging) in a Chelsea mews in 1953. Instead of being rejected by the public, he received a standing ovation at his next stage appearance. Biographer Sheridan Morley writes that while Gielgud never denied being gay, he always tried to be discreet about it and felt humiliated by the ordeal. Some speculate that it helped to bring to public attention a crusade to decriminalise homosexuality in England and Wales. Longtime lover Martin Hensler, 30 years his junior, died just a few months before Sir John did in 2000. He only publicly acknowledged Hensler as his partner in 1988, in the programme notes for Best of Friends[5] which was his final stage performance.[6] Despite going to Hollywood to appear alongside Marlon Brando in Julius Caesar in early 1950s, Gielgud would avoid Hollywood for over a decade for fear of being denied entry because of the arrest.

John was homo!?
If my dad knew, he'd be so upset. His son and his idol, both queers! He'd die, die I tell you!

The fact you say Rock Hudson was not an actor means you have not seen him in his oscar nominated role Giant. He was excellent in that. He also gave wonderful things to the sirk films "All that Heaven Allows" and Written on the Wind". Montgomery Clift was nominated 4 times. Jaye Davidson was nominated for The Crying Game.
Also Hatttie McDaniel the first African American winner had an affair with Tallulah Bankhead. A Rumor was that Joan Crawford had many lesbian affairs, one being with Monroe. And we can't forget that Brando said he had an affair with men in his autobio but that does not neccisarly make them gay.
