Gillian Anderson would theoretically be great. But it makes me wonder- shouldn't there be an iconic female action-drama character, as opposed to just a female James Bond? I really wonder if the upcoming Alicia Vikander relaunch of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider as a movie series will finally do this. Vikander is an actress of immense depth and substance, and I doubt she would sign on for a mindless "tits and stunts" movie if that were all the studios had in mind.
(Interestingly, the video game series of "Tomb Raider" relaunched a few years ago with the gratuitous cheesecake elements and pulpy narrative points toned down, and though I didn't play, the game was praised for its writing and cinematic tone. Maybe that was a test run to see if the world would accept a Lara Croft written like a human being, and not as a pair of breasts with a gun?)

Though certainly not of comparable iconic value, Peter O'Donnell's heroine Modesty Blaise was intended as a female James Bond. Moreover, there was a 1966 movie. MODESTY BLAISE directed by Joseph Losey starring Monica Vitti with Terrance Stamp and Dirk Bogarde.

She had been working on a sequel, actually. It had been up on IMDB as "In Development" but I just saw that it's no longer listed. It's a shame because that was a great movie!

Close. It was originally focused on a male lead. I believe Tom Cruise was attached.

Unfortunately, I suspect that any actress cast to reboot the franchise would have to be younger than Daniel Craig, thirty-eight-38, and his male predecessors when they first took the helm. In a few more years, both Saoirse Ronan and Sophie Turner will land right on the sweet spot to serve up a realistic action-drama star. Angie was 35 when SALT premiered with the Lara Croft movies long registered.
