I saw this today and went into the theater really wanting to like it given the subject matter and the talent involved. There were a couple pockets of goodness, but there were a lot of misfires too that were uncomfortably unfunny.
Kristen Wiig was named one of the top 10 playwrights to watch in New York magazine...10 years ago. Now she's a mess and her career never took off. Her life goes so far off the rails that her mother has to take her in while she pulls her life together. Annette Bening looks amazing at 55, but she's playing a character she's done many times before.
I liked Darren Criss and Christopher Fitzgerald the most out of the cast, but I don't blame any of the actors of the film's shortcomings. There was much promise with the premise, but it didn't pay off (the ending is abrupt and comes out of nowhere).
I'm seeing this tomorrow. I was really shocked when I read the reviews because this one (from the trailer) seemed like a really hilarious film.
I hear it's a real mess. Too bad considering all the talent involved. And I liked the trailer too, Jordan!
Somehow I completely missed seeing the trailer, but when I saw it pop up on Flixster I had to check it out.
The 16% it's sitting at on Rotten Tomatoes might be a little harsh, but the critics aren't too far off base.
I saw it tonight! I enjoyed it. Nothing amazing, but an enjoyable film. Darren Criss was really good, and Annette Bening was quite funny. I definitely agree about the ending being abrupt, although I did love Andrea Martin's little appearance! I feel like they could have done more with Imogene (Kristen Wiig's character) being a playwright. Was it amazing? No. Is it better than the 16% rating on Rotten Tomatoes? Absolutely.
