I FINALLY saw this film. A++
Astonishing.
This film better be nominated for Best Picture, WIN Best Screenplay, and hopefully a number of other nominations, esp acting.
Rappers have a great track record on screen--three more: LL CoolJ, Ice Cube and Tupac.
I really loved the film; it was so EPIC in its own way. The only thing I could've done without was the...
**SPOILER**
snow. Just a bit too much for me.
Other than that, it's a perfect picture of what LA is like right now, the racial tensions here are really wearing the city out. And the performances are fabulous.

Okay, so maybe rappers are great actors, but am I the only one who thinks that Ice T ('s character) should be shot and killed? He's awful in L&O: SVU. I can't stand to hear him speak.
And the thing I like about snow is that it makes everything clean and crisp, and with a lot you make things level.
I adored the movie but I thought the fact that there were SO many characters in it but not one gay or lesbian depicted was just plain homophobic.
You mean to tell me that Ryan Phillippe wasn't a homo?
LOL!
This was one of the best films I've seen in a while (of course I have not seen many.) Glad I saw this one.
Saw the film again last night, and felt the same way. Did it bother anyone else that the first half of the screenplay was forced?
Forced in what way? If I had to pick a hole in the screenplay, it would be that it stretched its credibility with the coincidence of the cops running into Thandie Newton and her husband so many times. If that's what you mean by forced then I guess I agree.
I saw it earlier this year and remember thinking that it was wonderful, the cast in particular. I agree with the favorites people have named in this thread, and want to add Loretta Devine. :)
Yeah, i thoroughly enjoyed this movie, and was pleasantly surprised by Ludacris... but i thought Don Cheadle was absolutely amazing, and he should just be handed a couple of oscars or something
Don Cheadle was excellent, Thandie was striking and Loretta was fab. I'll never forget her divine smile in Dreamgirls.
I thought the script was flawless. The way the characters kept weaving in and out and even the snow was a heightened reality---but us theatre folk shouldn't have a problem with that, if ya think about it.
Forced in what way?
I felt that Haggis was hitting me over the head in every other scene. Instead of letting the characters' actions speak for themselves, we got the obligatory stereotype speeches and the "It's because I'm black, isn't it?" lines. I also knew what Loretta Devine's character name would be, even before she said it. Just a gut feeling. Speaking of which... Unless I'm mistaking, no one at that character's age (late 40s, early 50s) would have a name like that.
I think the only character who made the stereotype speeches was Ludacris's character. And people like that exist and say things like that. Interesting that nobody minded Samuel "Hate Whitey" L. Jackson spending the whole of Die Hard With A Vengeance making the exact same freaking speeches.

I minded that, as well. Same thing with Jingle All the Way, and many of the other movies that try to pull stuff like that. As for Crash, I understand that people say thing similar to that, but it got repetitive and heavy-handed. Do you see where I'm coming from?
Yes absolutely. But that doesn't mean I agree. I did lean over to jrb in the middle of one of Ludacris's diatribes (I believe it was the bus one) and say "I want him dead" but that was because it was being played so well and he was so irritating and prejeudiced. Not because the writing was heavy handed.
I don't want you to agree with me, but at least you see what I'm referring to. When the movie get released on DVD, I'll see it for a third time. But, right now, those are the problems I have with the movie. Great performances, though. Especially Bullock, Howard, and Dillon.

I think it's a lock for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Ensemble.
Terrence Howard could get two Oscar noms this year - Best Supporting for CRASH and Best Actor for HUSTLE AND FLOW.
I think Thandie Newton deserves a Supporting nom also.
I'd have to agree with that, Jon.
