There's nothing at all humorous about vicious cruelty to toilet seats.
Just got back...it was such a surreal experience.
Seeing these women on TV over the years led me to develop a relationship with them. They were like my family. And could always make me happy.
When I got to Barnes and Noble I was two hours early and STILL the line was long. At first, the staff was giving me problems because you had to buy the DVD from the store to get on line to get it signed. (Which was such a scam). I already had the DVD for a few days because a friend of mine works for Buena Vista Video and got me an early copy. But, with some coercing...they let me on line.
Another thing was they would ONLY sign the DVD. Nothing else. No memorabilia. And there were no "posed" picutures allowes. Just candid ones.
Betty was the first to show up. They quickly ushered her to a back room. The Bea showed up and was brought to the same place. Rue was the last to arrive. A camera crew went into the back room probably to take an interview or something of the sort. But, when all three ladies emmerged there was just plain screaming. Everyone went NUTS! I was very excited to be meeting these legends, at least in my opinion.
They started signing autographs and since I had showed up early, it only took about 15 minutes to get to the table. There was a man who took your DVD from you and handed it to the three women.
I had spent all day thinking up something meaningful to say to all three of them and, after wracking my brain, all I could come up with was: "I don't know what else to say except, I love you." All three of them seemed really touched.
Rue smiled and said: "Thank you, sweetheart."
Bea said: "You're such a sweetie."
And Betty said: "Honestly, that means more to us than you will ever know."
They were all gems. At first we were allowed to get two items signed, but it was taking longer than they expected so they shortened it to one item. I had brought an original episode script that a friend had sent to me, so I was a little upset to not be able to get that signed. But I was overjoyed just to be there.
They were all adorable. Betty was wearing these cute old lady glasses. She's so tiny it's unbelievable. Rue was very made up and just gorgeous. And Bea was a lot shorter than I expected. I had never seen her standing up besides when I saw her one-woman show. And on TV she looks extremely tall. The time I met her previous to today, she was sitting down so I never got a feel for how tall she was in person. But she was Bea, and my heart was a-thumpin'.
These three women are all wonderful. Someone mentioned this was there first public appearance together in quite some time. I figured as much. Even for the reunion special all three women had their segments taped seperately. But, at the table they were all chatting away with each other.
It was quite a day...I feel very privileged to have met these outstanding women. These Golden Girls.
As I sit at work, jealousy dictates that now that I must hate you.
But it sounded like a fabulous experience.
I have always considered Bea quite tall in person - but then again, I'm 5'1".
I am SO happy for you! Since I couldn't go, I can live vicariously through your experience, FOAnatic...I would have just burst into tears when I saw them anyway; I almost did just reading your post. Thanks again!
I got there late and wasn't able to actually meet them, but I watched from outside, through the window, for awhile. One fan was obviously a little unstable, and tried to climb up on the platform to take a picture with them or something, and the security guard grabbed her. She started to cry. All three women immediately started yelling at the guard... I could read Bea's lips - "Why are you doing that??" Rue got up and came around to take the fan's arm and they took a picture with her. Drama, drama, drama.
Honey, it wouldn't be The Girls if there wasn't a little drama...all three are known for strong personalities...I'm glad they took the picture for that lady. Very sweet of them!
That was definitely a boy.
I'll just take comfort in that I'm seeing Mr. George Devereaux this weekend.
