"Can't wait to see "Atonement," and I've talked to enough people out here to believe that it truly is the front-runner to win the Oscar."
Even with all the snubs from the Guilds? That's a big sign of lack of support.
b12b: Wasn't it you that last year swore up and down that everyone one was "talking about" BABEL?
Regarding the ending of NO COUNTRY, I actually think the Coen's did exactly what they were trying to do. And the way the shot was set up, it said so many things at once, at least to me.
I agree. I don't think the ending was a cop out. I think it was highly planned and thought out. Very meaningful.
Yay for Atonement and I hope it takes it all at the Oscars!
I wish Romola Garai would get more love, she's so undervalued as an actress. She's been a favorite of mine for a while now.
Ok, and if anyone hasn't seen Atonement yet, and not that I support piracy or anything, but I know it's not being played everywhere... So if anyone is dying to see it, and as long as you promise to rent it at blockbuster when it's released on dvd, lol, then just to let you know, my friend put it up in 4 parts on quicksilverscreen.com and the last time I checked, it was still up and running.
Cannot belive Atonement won. Overated, English "Pearl Harbor" with an AWFUL Knightley who I normally love. Let's hope the academy is a bit wiser.
Knightley was far from awful (though I did find her a bit overdramatic every time she muttered the line "come back to me"). My only quibble with her and the award season is that I would not consider her the leading actress in the film. I guess she was put in there that category for the same reason Beyonce and Meryl Streep were in the leading category last year.
This review made me chuckle
Sorry I missed such a great show!
I was annoyed that they also skipped 5 categories. Could they have at least cut the clips of Nikki Blonsky and Angelina Jolie and fit in the rest of the winners. No music awards, screenplay award, foreign film award and Best Actor in a TV movie award, come on!
I'm very surprised Atonement won Best Drama Picture. I thought for sure it was going to go to either No Country For Old Men or There Will Be Blood. Also pleasantly surprised that Sweeney won. I thought that Juno would take Best Picture cause I figured Sweeney and Hairspray would probably split the votes down the middle. Depp winning was not a shock; I was 99% sure he was gonna take it. But I am slightly dissapointed that Pushing Daisies didn't win anything.
Oh, and I'm quite sad that Romola Garai isn't getting more award love.
I thought she was decidedly inferior to Ronan and Redgrave in the part, actually.
No quibbles from me, although I was sure the Coens were a lock for Best Director. I do wish Cotillard had been in the Drama category so that Amy Adams, Helena Bonham Carter and Ellen Page had had chances, but that's the way it goes.

Yeah, that was very annoying. They showed Nikki's reaction to being nominated 2 or 3 times, plus the footage from when she won her Critic's Choice award. And they kept playing up the Nikki Blonsky vs. Ellen Page thing. I thought for sure that one of them was gonna win, just from the way they kept hyping it up.
I was surprised Atonement won the Golden Globe, but I fully expect it to win the Oscar. It is exactly the type of film they love to award Best Picture, regardless the competition. I'm sure they breathed a sigh of relief that they had a typical glossy sweeping epic on which to vote this season and they finally got Scorcesi out of the way last year, so they were probably shaking in their boots fearing they would have another Million Dollar Baby on their hands this year.

I'm happy that Sweeney and Depp won last night. Going in, the only awards I knew that had a lock were the Best Actor categories. I had the feeling that both Depp and Lewis were going to win, would've been shocked if neither won.
I though the Cohen Brothers were going to win Best Director or at least if they weren't going in that direction, that maybe Burton would win.
I also thought that Pushing Daisies would've won at least Best TV Comedy and that Ellen Page was going to win Best Actress: Musical or Comedy, but oh well.
MisterMatt: I don't think that ATONEMENT is the frontrunner for the Oscar at all. In fact, I think it probably has less support going into the awards than NO COUNTRY, THERE WILL BE BLOOD, and JUNO. Not to mention the wonderful MICHAEL CLAYTON and INTO THE WILD.
If it were up to me, ATONEMENT would sweep the Oscars - but I don't think that will happen. NO COUNTRY is the thing to beat, in all categories.
