Thursday is auditions for graduation solos at my school. There are 2 slots available and there are only 5 people (including myself) signed up to audition right now.
My voice teacher wants me to sing "Make Them Hear You" from Ragtime. I love the song, and it has some appropriate lyrics... but not all of them are really fitting, I don't think. "How justice was our battle and how justice was denied" might be a bit much. Am I right in thinking that? Could it work for graduation or is it too much of a stretch?
What are some other good songs for graduation? It can be anything--not only musicals, of course. I'm just trying to think of a better fitting song.
Why not HILLS OF TOMORROW from MERRILY? It actually IS a graduation song.

Oh, lildogs! I'm not a 4 part choir!
"If You Believe" from The Wiz. I did it at my graduation.

I agree that Make Them Hear You is not right for graduation.
How about "Parks' Turn" from Gypsy
Why did I do it?
What did it get me?
Scrapbooks full of me in the background.
Give 'em love and what does it get ya?

haha, gothampc, I'm all for that idea. Only if I can do it in full drag though!!
Well, I'm not so sure it'd go over very well at a Texas high school graduation.
...maybe at the drag show on Saturday nights.

Just please don't sing "Seasons of Love," "For Good," or "Letting Go." I've heard all of them at graduations and am SICK of them.
Maybe a nice arangement of the Irish blessing? Better than at my high school convocation where we sang "Lonesome Road." Because what message is better for 18 year olds than knowing that you'll be alone for the rest of your life?

No worries--wasn't planning on doing any of those. For Good is the new Seasons of Love. So annoying!

Packing up the dreams
God planted,
in the fertile soil
of you,
Can't believe the hopes
He's granted
means a chapter in your life
is through.
But we'll keep you close
as always.
It won't even seem you've gone.
'Cause our hearts in big and small ways
will keep the love that keeps us strong.
And friends are friends forever
if the Lord's the Lord of them.
And a friend will not say "never"
'Cause the welcome will not end.
Though it's hard to let you go,
in the Father's hands we know,
that a lifetime's not too long
to live as friends.

I was the graduation soloist at my school and I sang a verse of Our Time from Merrily We Roll Along. MANY tears in the audience, and I almost started to bawl(and did at our final chorus concert). I highly recommend it.

The soloist at my graduation made a mostly unsuccessful attempt to defy gravity. I don't recommend that.
A girl at my graduation sang "Take Me to the World" from Evening Primrose and I really enjoyed it.
Two suggestion:
"What Can You Do With a BA in English?" from Ave Q
"Perky Little Porn Star" from Naked Boys Singing (Full Frontal required)

Children Will Listen?
"There's a Sucker Born Ev'ry Minute" from "Barnum" would be good...

No One Is Alone from ITW? Better?
It's tomorrow! I'm not completely satisfied with my decision, but I think No One Is Alone is a better choice for graduation (and a bit easier to sing).
