Grandma

Anybody seen this yet? Lily Tomlin is fantastic as always, and the movie is pretty great. Very funny with a melancholy edge, and it does a great job of not showing any judgement to any of the characters. Hard to believe its by the same guy who directed American Pie.

Am looking forward to seeing it this week.

Laverne Cox is in this, too. Love her.

What a terrific film. It's wonderful to see Tomlin's talent being given full expression through this movie. What a magnificent gift to be given a late-career performance that is probably her best work done on film. How lovely to see Judy Greer be allowed to act this summer! That woman is too good to be wasted in the SH*T she got stuck with (though I'm sure it made her a nice amount of money). Whoever thought up casting Marcia Gay Harden as Lily Tomlin's daughter is genius. Julia Garner (with whom I wasn't familiar) was really strong and Sam Elliott is heartbreaking and still f*cking sexy.

This movie has a lot to say about grief and how it becomes an everyday part of our lives once we experience it in a profound way. There was a moment or two that were almost a little too much to bear (particularly in a scene in a cab near the end). I'm don't always buy the premises of 'A Day in the Life' movies, but this one worked like gangbusters. I can't recommend it strongly enough.

Tomlin's been getting award buzz for this, and I would love to see a nomination come to pass for her. How wonderful that her career is having a resurgence!

I thought Elliot damn near stole the movie. Tomlin is wonderful, but their scene kicks the movie into higher gear, the backstory emotionally rich and complicated. I hope they push him for a supporting; not a second of his screen time is wasted, all in service of the compelling character.

^ Agreed.

Spoilery, I guess: I was taken aback by how much he cracked open when he found out what the money was for. I thought this was economical writing at its best. They gave us just enough information for the back story and then let the two brilliant actors bring life to bear on their performances. It was really overwhelming.

The acting is fabulous across the board, and I appreciated the film's blunt and unapologetic treatment of abortion, lesbianism, and feminism.

I just want more movies like this. Is that too much to ask?

In case anybody is interested in the fabulous Eileen Myles, a quote of hers is the movie's epigram, and who is name checked in the film, below is a video clip.

I didn't know a lot of people had actually heard of her and then I saw some of her books on the walls at the last Whitney biennial. As works of art themselves.

Same feeling, exactly. We get to September, after a summer -- well, not exactly pitched to people who've had their pubic hair more than a year or two. And then justifiably we get angry that we had a 6-9 month dry spell between Oscar season and the start of the next. Last year at this time I walked into "The Skeleton Twins" on a rainy Saturday afternoon and felt reborn. Not because that film is superior (though Heder's work is way underappreciated), but because its artistry is connected to a certain kind of storytelling MIA for half the damn year.

For me the harvest began with "Tangerine," another "day in the life" I loved every bit of.

Tangerine didn't expand into my area, but I agree that 2015 has been disappointing. So far the best movie of the year was Spy

#13

Grandma

I wish it was as consistently good as its best parts, the way the buddy movie with Sandra Bullock was.

Grandma or Tangerine?

I agree with you about The Heat.

Grandma

Thank you for piecing together my brain farts. I wish all of Spy was as consistent in its funniness the way The Heat was. I think McCarthy is such an improviser that some directors simply can't choose what to cut out so they leave in too much. I mean, I wouldn't be able to pick what to cut but I think that's the danger with her.
