ENDLESS LOVE by Scott Spencer--Actually, Spencer's whole oeuvre (WAKING THE DEAD, MEN IN BLACK, A SHIP MADE OF PAPER) is all brilliant, but special mention must be made of this explicit, feverish portrayal of young love--or is it lust? The sex scenes are real eyebrow-raisers. Forever besmirched by the ass-y movie.

Endless Love was one of my favorite books way back when. I bought it in first pressing hardcover because shortly after publication, Bob Greene wrote a column saying "This book is amazing and the rumor is Brooke Shields is going to star in a movie of it and ruin it, so read it now!"

He was correct. Great book AND a graet title song, however.

Heart of Darkness by Conrad; didn't read it, aced the paper;
Waiting For Godot; assigned, just didn't happen;
Oedipus Rex; assigned for 3 separate classes, never read it.

apparently no one has ever finished The Last of the Mohicans.

Somebody once gave me a copy of "Call Me Crazy" for my birthday. I was so appalled by their cheapness, I never read the book.

Ada, or Ardor: A Family Chronicle by Vladimir Nabokov

It's hard to get through it because it seems so dense, but after the first hundred pages, it's entrancing.

okay, so Endless Love can be taken off the list...seems quite a few people read it.

...btw, isnt that why they made a movie of it?

I guess you could make the case that Endless Love was a more successful Book than movie-- the book is still in print while the movie has never moved to DVD.

I recommend the book all the time. Spencer really captured what it's like to be young and crazy and in love.

Ulysses is known by Dubliners by the places that are mentioned in it (many of which I pass every day), but none of them seem to have read it. Too long.

By the way, if NO ONE has read them, how do we know they're so great?

The Diary of Samuel Pepys. Everything you wanted to know about London in the 1600s, the Great Fire of London and even a Shakespeare play.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

I've only read bits of it, but I find Pepys' Diary really interesting.

The rain we knew is a thing of the past -

Did you read the bit where his wife gets mad at him and chases him with a fire poker? I think she does it because she thinks he had an affair with their housekeeper.

that is great. Here' another.

My best friend had to read Uncle Tom's Cabin. The day before it was due he had only read like two pages. So he randomly opened up to a page, read a few lines and wrote an A paper.

Theres more.

The next day the teacher came up to him and said " John, I really am proud of you for making it through. I've never been able to. I've always found Beecher Stowe just so....difficult. But I think you really captured the essence of the book."

HAHAHAHA...we had a really good laugh.

Definitely Ulysses - I have read the first two chapters about five times, and I love the writing but just can't seem to devote myself to it.

BTW, I just recently watched Citizen Kane - I think most of the people who consider that the best movie ever made haven't seen it either.

I don't know. I've probably seen Citizen Kane two dozen times (I own the DVD) and personally find it gets even better and more brilliant with every viewing. Certainly one of the most important and influential (and, to me, entertaining) films ever made.

I remember kind of enjoying Heart of Darkness back in high school and it lead me to read other works by Conrad.

I've read the Oedipus trilogy more times than I can count over the years and think it certainly deserves its esteemed reputation.

Ditto with Godot, which I've probably seen a half dozen productions of over the years. Genius.

I never made it through Last of the Mohicans, but my older brother went on a big Fenimore Cooper kick several years back and read all of his novels multiple times. Mohicans is one of his all-time favorites.

I recently read Heart of Darkness. It was very fascinating. I don't know why you wouldn't read it if it was assigned; it is very, very short.

And while I haven't read Ulysses, I adore James Joyce's collection of short stories, Dubliners. I'm not a huge fan of short story collections, but it has a lot of excellent stories that make a very strong whole.

I doubt I'll ever get around to Ulysses. Frankly, Joyce's whole attitude towards the book is rather off-putting. "It took me twenty years to write, so it should take you twenty years to really read it." Yeah. Okay.

Anyone who likes Apocalypse Now should read Heart of Darkness, to see the parallels. I thought Conrad was an amazing writer, especially after I discovered that English was a second language for him.

I saw Godot before I read it. I can't imagine how it reads without some image of staging.

And having read Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, I think I have read the best of Joyce anyway. I would have to take a course in which Ulysses is required reading to have the discipline to get through it.

My favorite "old Hollywood" trashy novel is "All That Glitters" by Tom Tryon.

Brilliantly delicious.

I've never read Samuel Pepys'Diaries. But I read about them in "84, Charring Cross Road" by Helene Hanff.

I read it in less than an hour and it has been a part of my life ever since.

Another great book is Walker Percy's "Lost In The Cosmos: the Last Self Help Book." It's like having a long and varied conversation with a very intelligent friend. I find a strange comfort in that book.

Another favorite is J.F. Federspeigel's "The Ballad of Typhoid Mary", about the immigrant cook who carried the plague. I really tried to turn it into a musical, but it kept seeming like "Sweeney Todd" in drag.

How many of the LES MISERABLES fans have actually read it?

(I'm not a huge fan of the show, but I have read it.)

Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)
