Hollywood may have THOUGHT that was HELO, DOLLY!, but actually it was HELLO, DREARIE! That is the reason why I ABSOLUTELY HATE MOVIES AND I WISH THEY'D STOP MAKING THEM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Thanks for raising my blood pressure, Jose!!!!)

BTW: Jo Ann Worley was indeed Carol Channing's first understudy, but she never went on. Years later she did a version of the show in Vegas.

I simply can't picture Jo Ann Worley as Dolly. Isn't that a bit like me playing Peter Pan?
Dollypop, how was Phyllis Diller as Dolly?
Jose' , two other dates/names to add to your Dolly production list.

Phyllis Diller was a fine Dolly. She gave an honest performance and was fairly good as a singer. The rumors of her tossing chicken bones to the audience during the restaurant scene were false--at least at the performances I attended.
Did you know that Richard Deacon was her Horace? He, too, was quite good.
Happy Dolly Day everyone!
I'm still ill with the flu, But I will have beets tonight in honour of Dolly & Carol. I'll salt them too, lol. I did enjoy Pearl Bailey's white dolly gown too I must admit. Pearl and the Divine Carol, My two Dolly's. There was another who I adored but it was on a short tour and I missed it. Dollypop, Do you know if when Ann Miller toured with Hello Dolly for that short while if they let her tap in it? I know that sounds absurd but I honestly never knew.
Here's to Dolly, Forever! (I'm getting ready to salt my beets, lol!)
"Love, look in my window. Love, knock on my door. Love, come in and staaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy a while!"
Gives me chills every time!
Did they re-issue a cast recording with Pearl Bailey?
Unfortunately no. It is out of print and really hard to find on CD. I don't have it yet.
oh and I am wearing a red tie today to match Dolly's dress. can't wait for the Papermill revival this summer!

Happy Dolly Day!
I went to mass this morning--just because I felt like it. I got there early enough to chat with our pastor before it started. I pleaded with him to replace the opening hymn with "Hello, Dolly!" in honor of the day. He wouldn't hear of it.
During the mass he asked me to do the readings and I was only too happy to comply. In his homily afterwards, though, he remarked that he was in fear that I'd slip into my Carol Channing impersonation while I was up there. He also commented on how auspicious the day was.
Okay, now I'm going to make a batch of tutti frutti ice cream.
Dollypop, you crack me up!!
I can't wait for the production at Papermill either. Hope I don't have to go alone like I did for Ragtime.

I'm having dinner at the Pine Grove Inn--in an atmosphere of elegance and refinement.
I'm presently listening to the Israeli version of the show.

I'm wearing the Hello, Dolly t-shirt I got when I did the show!
Broadway Legend Joined: 5/15/03
I just hope that t-shirt is red!

The Pine Grove is still there? I remember going there as a child for special occasion dinners, It was beautiful!
Broadway Legend Joined: 11/2/04
The shirt is white, but all the print is red, and there's a very Dolly hat on the front!
Broadway Legend Joined: 5/15/03
Okay, you may continue wearing the t-shirt.
Yenta, the Pine Grove is still beautiful. It should be even nicer tonight because Mud Creek is frozen and there's snow on the ground. You'll recall that the windows overlook the creek.
Happy Dolly Day all!

If my memory serves me correctly, the Pine Grove was well known for German food. I used to order Wiener Schnitzel al la Holstein. I think the last time I was there was in 1970. Boy, I miss that area. The last time I was in Bellport was about 10 yrs ago.

A little DOLLY trivia:
The original staging of "So Long Dearie" had Carol Channing descending from above on a swing, singing "Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye..." She was wearing a tight-fitting yellow dress. The number was re-staged after only a few performances because Carol couldn't make the costume change and climb up to mount the swing in time for the number.
Reading of all these wonderful actresses who are all such great personalities makes me think it really would be a hard job to find a strong Dolly and actresses to follow these days. Other than Loreta Switt I mean. No seriously to come up with 10 really good strong personalities I think you'd be pushing it.
Ann Miller played Dolly? That's one I didn't know about. Sorry, I didn't wear red, it's way too hot here for that.
