#1HELP! I need to compress a PDF!!
Posted: 2/10/10 at 12:50am

I have a Mac. I have a PDF files created in Word which contains text and jpgs.

It was originally 22.4MB and I need it to be less than 4MB. In Preview I compressed it to be 236KB successfully, however the jpegs printed VERY blurry. The jpegs are of scanned text documents.

I need to successfully compress the file to be less than 4MB while allowing the jpegs to print so that it can be read!! Possible?

It's very urgent as I have a 7am deadline! Any/all help very much appreciated -- I'm going to continue to google on my own...

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I'm not an expert, but Solid PDF Creator works well with Word and it allows you to choose the dpi which would significantly reduce the size if the program you're using now only allows a previously set dpi. Obviously that will effect the print quality, but at least you can decide what is acceptable for you. If you're going to print an image though it shouldn't be any less than 300 dpi.

I've attempted this before and was unsuccessful but maybe it'll work for you. Open Automator on your Mac. Search Google for Automator Mac Compress PDF or something. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

What do you need it to be small for? Because if it's okay to transmit the file piece by piece, you can split it using HJSplit.

Another program you can use, which is available on download.com, is PrimoPDF, which lets you create a PDF file when you print your Word file. It's free and it lets you customize the quality/size of the file.

Oh, and what are the .jpgs pictures of? If they're something graphical with sharp lines and flat planes of color - like an icon or graph or smiley or something - you can turn them into .gifs, because those can be better and sharper if they have text and need to be "read", as you mentioned. On the other hand, if the picture is something with gradients in color - a photo, a painting, something like that - you're better off leaving it a .jpg.
