re: HUUUUGE CONGRATS TO ZEPPIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all, Congratulations! Isn't it a wonderful feeling to finally know you'll have your own classroom and not have to wait for a phone call at 5AM each morning to see whether or not you're working that day or to know that you'll only be in one place for a month or two?

Secondly, I was reading your post, thinking to myself, "Wow, I can't believe NYC public schools make you jump through so many hoops to get a job. I thought they were practially begging for people to teach there?" Then I saw it's a charter school. That sounds great. What is their "theme'? Is it a science charter or a performing arts charter or a technology charter?

re: HUUUUGE CONGRATS TO ZEPPIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it's an arts and sciences school

and yea, HUGE relief that i'll actually know where i'll be everyday!

when i had the interview at the dept of ed, it was difficult. i took time off teaching (i had a long term placement at this point) to go down to the city... the interview was 45 min and he didn't make me feel adequate at all. he pretty much told me "thanks for coming, now go talk to principals and find a job for yourself... there are career fairs next week on the boroughs, go to those." too bad i travelled across the state... you'd think they'd take that into account. OBVIOUSLY NOT! so that's why i'm REALLY happy to be where i am, where teachers and administrators care for the students as well as those coming in to teach re: HUUUUGE CONGRATS TO ZEPPIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

beacon, i think i'm gonna need bison dip shipped in in mass quantities...

Unfortunately, this is completely typical. I can't tell you how many times I rearranged my life to go to a teaching interview that went nowhere. For example, the one in the district I student taught in in Upstate NY that called and wanted me to come for an interview, THAT AFTERNOON! And didn't really care that I was 3 1/2 hours away!

In a way, getting a teaching job is like getting an acting job. They basically say, here are the days we are interviewing, and if you can't make it, too bad, there are 50 more people waiting to take your place. Never mind if you're trying to work some sort of other temporary job to actually pay the bills.....be there on Thursday or you lose your opportunity.

Well, New York City will definetely be an even more prettier place now that zeppy is in town.
And if I had kids (and lived in NYC) I would be really happy if they had such a wonderful and great guy as their teacher !!!
