Yeah, I was wondering when the personal attacks were going to start. If you can't participate legitimately in the discussion, then why not just not participate? At least Gaveston is participating by throwing a legitimate argument into the ring.

Try to wrap your neurotic brain around this: There are PLENTY of us who do not want to live in a non-secular government be it Muslim or Christian, so your poor academic exercise of "would you rather" is meaningless. The difference is that those Christians who were responsible for all that bloodshed were not following the example of their religion's namesake, Jesus Christ. The Muslims who are ravishing women and children and cutting off the heads of the infidel are following the example of their prophet, Muhammad. You cannot go back in time and change WHO Muhammad was and what he did. When Muslims look at the actions of their prophet, they see a man who caused the deaths of thousands of people, a man who raided caravans and lopped heads off and married little girls. A man who made things up from Allah as he wished, usually to excuse what he and his followers were doing. If a Christian is following the example of their prophet then they are living peaceful loving lives. Not so the followers of Muhammad.
As to the argument of secularism, there is the argument that many Christian nations are secular BECAUSE of the Christian population, which is primarily loving, and peaceful and which follows the word of Christ, "Judge not lest ye be judged". The non-violent Christian nations are not the result of secularism, it is secularism itself which is the result of Christianity.

And you base this rather arbitrary opinion on what exactly?
I take it since you speak for all 3 billion Muslims that you must have conducted a poll, a survey, and run some statistical models to arrive at your conclusion.
So you'll need to post those results to support your theory.

And, therefore we should....?
What, equate ISIS with Islam? Not try to politically distance ISIS from Islam in order to appeal to Muslims in order to enjoin them in a fight against ISIS? Use this particular point in history to condemn Islamic governments or Islamic practices wholesale, including the extremist Islamic regime of our Saudi allies, and just take on ISIS with no help from Muslim cooperatives - Would that be a politically wise thing to do? Would that benefit the effort to defeat ISIS? How exactly would that work?
Stalin was a totalitarian and responsible for the murder of millions of people well before and during World War II. Hitler was also a totalitarian. It was the age of totalitarianism. It was brutal.
But in order to defeat Nazi totalitarianism we didn't succeed by broadly broadcasting our disfavor of totalitarianism; we joined with one totalitarian to defeat another. And, as it happens, the world is a far better place because we did. Far from perfect, still fraught with horrors, but certainly far better.
Just how great would the Greatest Generation have been in its aims if not for their having Soviet colleagues in destroying Hitler?
By the way nothing in this post should be taken as suggesting that I favor military intervention to defeat ISIS. I have big reservations that doing so is not going to make things better for the region; but I certainly consider the objective of defeating ISIS imperative, haven't completely ruled out military intervention as an unjustified or misguided alternative, and, above all, don't think any effort to defeat ISIS can be accomplished by linking ISIS with Islam or even by failing to distance Islam from ISIS.
Jesus is a prophet of Islam. Jesus said that the greatest commandment was to love thy neighbors as thyself. Raping, kidnapping, enslaving and beheading ones neighbors is not following the greatest commandment of jesus, one of the three prophets of islam. It is violating it. Therefore, the statement that ISIS is not Islam is not without merit. Nor is it without merit to say that all the travesties committed by Christians in the name of Christianity which violated this greatest commandment were unChristian. And that includes things being done by Christians today, and in the name of religion, which although a far cry from what ISIS is doing are still horrible.

Instead of arguing about which mythical figure had a more violent ideology it might be better to talk about the conditions that draw people to these extremist groups in the first place. Things like poverty and oppression.
If we spent half the money we spend on indiscriminately dropping bombs from the sky on fighting poverty and improving education, groups like Hamas and Isis probably wouldn't even exist.

"Islamism" has been used to distinguish "political Islam," i.e., when Islam is used by a group or a government as a political force.
It's used in countries where there are secular parties and religious parties, like in Egypt, where the party that was created by the Muslim Brotherhood has been outlawed by the new government.
