"A posh food store in New York's Greenwich Village has found itself red faced after offering hams for sale with the slogan "Delicious for Hanukkah," the current Jewish religious holiday."
"A manager at the Balducci's gourmet grocery store told the newspaper that the sign was a mistake and blamed it on a stock clerk."

They can't eat the rear of a pig.
Snouts are okay, I think.

Posted: 12/6/07 at 2:44pmok, i get it. I don't know anything about jewish traditions or what have you, but can we at least keep the sarcastic remarks to a minimum so that I might actually LEARN something here?

Posted: 12/6/07 at 2:45pmWhat gets me is that last statement. A manager blamed it on a stock clerk. Are we living in a "pass the blame" generation or what?

Here you go, Guido.

Since Guido is sincere...
Some Jews are Kosher. If you follow Kosher dietary laws, there are certain foods/meats you cannot eat, and certain foods that you cannot combine together.
One of the meats you cannot eat is pork.
I have a number of Jewish friends who are not Kosher, but still choose not to eat pork.
Animals that may not be eaten
Of the "beasts of the earth" (which basically refers to land mammals with the exception of swarming rodents), you may eat any animal that has cloven hooves and chews its cud. Lev. 11:3; Deut. 14:6. Any land mammal that does not have both of these qualities is forbidden. The Torah specifies that the camel, the rock badger, the hare and the pig are not kosher because each lacks one of these two qualifications. Sheep, cattle, goats, deer and bison are kosher.
Of the things that are in the waters, you may eat anything that has fins and scales. Lev. 11:9; Deut. 14:9. Thus, shellfish such as lobsters, oysters, shrimp, clams and crabs are all forbidden. Fish like tuna, carp, salmon and herring are all permitted. "
Info about Kosher Laws.

oh wow...now THAT was a lesson.
I didn't know there were such strict rules you have to follow.

Posted: 12/6/07 at 2:54pmI'm a veggie. Thus, being Jewish would be convenient. Perhaps I should convert. Just as long as circumcision is not a requirement.

Back when I was working on the cruise ship, we had some strict Jews on one cruise and I felt bad that they couldn't eat ANYTHING on the shipp except the little 'frozen dinners' that they had brought with them. As well as the plastic utensils.
I also live in the Hancock Park area of LA and we have loads of Orthodox Jews here. I also feel bad for them when it gets hot, because they still have to wear all of those layers of wool and a hat.
You'd think God would be a little nicer to them.

I have many Jewish friends and I know a lot of what can and can't be done, eaten ect by simple observation... but of course am still ignornant of many things.
Ignornant but curious and interested

With the exception of a few individuals, my family doesn't keep kosher. But advertising a ham for a Jewish holiday? Well, that's just kind of wrong and funny at the same time.
I liken it to advertising a rib-eye steak, delicious for Friday night's dinner during Lent...

Some Jews are reform and don't eat Kosher food.
I eat Kosher meat when I cook meat which is never. I am agnostic but I never liked ham. I do eat pork chops at asian restaurants.
I also eat pork fried rice once in awhile.
You can be raised Jewish and not follow Kosher laws. I came from a non religious home. And now I no longer consider myself Jewish.
PS Religious Jews can't eat shellfish. I could not live without shrimp, lobster and crab. The laws were for ancient times when there were health concerns about shellfish. I don't understand why shrimp is forbidden. Shrimp is perhaps my favorite food.
That and caviar.
