Hang Up The Phone by Annie Golden

Hol-eee crap! I remembered this video--which I saw maybe once--from 1984 and the song has stuck in my head for nigh these 24 (has it been that long?) years. It's from the now out of print soundtrack from SIXTEEN CANDLES.

So I look it up on Youtube on a lark and--lo and behold--not only is it there but its by Annie Golden!!! I had no idea! Anyways, enjoy this eighties flashback.
Hang Up The Phone
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

I remember thinking her voice was similar to Cyndi Lauper's. It was a great, catchy tune that should have been a bigger hit.

I believe this came out right around the same time as "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" went through the roof, so I believe Miss Cyn may have stolen La Golden's thunder.

I love those fun, silly, cheap videos from the '80s. Remember "Don't Put Another Dime in the Jukebox?" That was another fave.

Oh yeah, that song has been in my brain for 20+ years, as has "When the Rain Begins to Fall" and "They Don't Know".

I do love this song and had no idea it was by Annie Golden, but my favorite 80s song is probably "If You Leave" from Pretty In Pink. I never get tired of it! Just one of those things that makes bad days just that much better. re: Hang Up The Phone by Annie Golden...if that makes any sense.

She's hoping he's talking to a "he" not a "she"...mmm, how Liza of her.

And he's wearing a pastel sweater with matching mittens...hmmmm.

I loved Annie Golden since the movie "Hair". I still have an Lp of her group "The Shirts" from the early 80's. I need to pull that out now.

PJ and I saw her at the After Party at the Laurie Beechman a few months ago, and she was wonderful.

Best-ever "Frank Mills"?

Is the the same Annie Golden from Xanadu??

She sounds EXACTLY like Cyndi!

"So Unusual" was released in 1983. This came out a year later and was a jump on the Cyndi bandwagon which didnt really work. She's great, tho.

Love the sweater mittens on the "boyfriend". Or is that someone else who needs to "hang up the phone?" It always confused me.

I love her Frank Mills too...and think it's stinky it was cut from the film.
Another great version is Kathleen Wilhoite:
