Wow, go Gloria!
A 4th of July baby to boot. Hard to believe she could have sailed on the Titanic herself, as a 22-month-old baby.
She was a leading lady in films nearly 80 years ago.
Holy crap!

Who says Elizabeth Taylor is the last remaining star of Hollywood's Golden Age?

Elizabeth Taylor is the last, in that she was the last (or most recent) actor to become a megastar under the old "Golden Age" studio system. At the same time she rose from child actor to leading lady to superstar at MGM, other big stars around her were not from that "Hollywood machine." This was the 1950s. They were free agents, with 1, 2 or 3-picture deals. I'm talking about Brando, Dean, Clift. Taylor was one of the last to go at MGM. When her contract was up after "Butterfield 8," she didn't renew. Most big stars (other than Debbie Reynolds, Lionel Barrymore - until his death - and a handful of others) at MGM had long-since been let go from their contracts.
I might argue that Debbie Reynolds also was one of the last to rise to stardom at the old "factory." And she was a bona fide movie star. But not a megastar like Taylor, who joined that elite group of superstars like Marilyn Monroe, Garbo, Jean Harlow, Clark Gable, Charlie Chaplin, John Wayne, etc.
Another arguable one was Doris Day, who rose to stardom at Warner Bros., and was at the top of her game (and the top box office draw) in the late '50s and early '60s.
But Taylor is not the last, as in "last remaining." Not by a long shot. She is the "last" as in the final superstar from the Golden Age to get there.
Other movie stars from the Golden Age who are still with us:
Luise Rainer
Olivia De Havilland
Joan Fontaine
Margaret O'Brien
Shirley Temple
Mickey Rooney
Esther Williams
Jackie Cooper
Ann Rutherford
Debbie Reynolds
Jane Powell
Leslie Caron
Deanna Durbin
Eleanor Parker
Kirk Douglas
... and Gloria Stuart!
