Jelly donuts? I've been Jewish all my life but I never knew that jelly donus had some significance at any time of the year.
Although they are good any time of the year!
I went to the mall tonight (with Wonderboy- a real life friend) and we watched a juggling Rabbi and sang Hanukkah songs!
5 Nights to go...!
I hope everyone is having a Jewtastic time!

Jane! Really? In Hebrew school we'd have jelly donuts (along with latkes) during Hanukkah time. It's because they're deep fried in oil. I think it's an Israeli tradition, and the donuts are called sufganiyot. Many kosher bakeries make them, and they're delicious! Much better than Dunkin' Donuts, though I take the easy route and pick up a couple of boxes instead of attempting to make them. The latkes are work enough!
...L-O-V-E latkes and jelly donuts!

My avatar is giving me cravings! I think I'll make another batch and bring them into the office this week.
I just bought about 20 jelly donuts (yes, sufganiot) to bring to a party tonight....their smell is driving me crazy!! They're so good.
Happy Channukah from the holy land!

BwayLover, I had no idea you were in Israel! I would LOVE to celebrate Hanukkah there one year. Have a safe, healthy and happy holiday.
Blueroses-I'm really astounded that I never heard of this. I'm going to Florida tomorrow and I'll ask my relatives about this-why no one has ever mentioned a jelly donut! Thanks!

"Jelly donuts? I've been Jewish all my life but I never knew that jelly donus had some significance at any time of the year. "
I also never heard of any significance with Jelly donuts. hmm...
Anyway, last night was our Hanukkah party!
We had latkes, blintzes, applesauce, sour cream, Hanukkah cookies (shaped as dreidels and Jewish stars) etc.
Yum
For the first time, my neighbor was Hanukkah Harry! He gave out gag gifts...it was really funny.
Then we gave out the other gifts. YAY
"The one important thing you need to know about this festival, properly named Hanukkah, is that it provides a divine ordination to eat deep-fried foods. That's the kind of religion Judaism is; and surely even those who are not the Chosen, have to respect that, admire that, love it. I can't think of any other faith that would lead one so directly to the deep-fat fryer, but then few religions express themselves so emphatically with food."
- Nigella Lawson, Feast: Food to Celebrate Life
Peace and hope to all.
Happy Hannukkah to all! ( I am too full of latkes now....)
Now sing along---"One latka, two latkes, and so on into the night....." that's all I remember!
Happy Hanukah/Hannukah/Hanukkah/Hannukkah/Chanukah/Channukah/Chanukkah/Channukkah/Chenookaha to all! :P
I haven't had a single latke yet this year. *wants*
