So is April 14 the confirmed wide release date, or just for LA and NYC?

Just LA and NYC on that date.
Then, hopefully, everywhere else. I can't imagine that it would not have a good showing at the Box Office. It has gotten so much recognition at important festivals.

I don't think it bodes well for a near release (or a successful release) if the date isn't announced until the last minute, right?

They are handling this one in a very specific way. I know that Patrick will be very busy in the coming weeks with press on this (Fangoria magazine is going to do a feature on it in the issue out 3/21).
They showed it at Sundance, Cannes, Sitges, SXSW, and some other festivals where it got very strong and positive reaction. It won major awards at SITGES.
I think they are playing their cards close to the vest on this one and so far it has worked perfectly. Interest is piqued and they are gathering critical acclaim.

Oh, I'm quite confident that the movie itself will be good. I'm just worried about the commercial rammifications of having a last minute release date, or the security consequences of waiting you make even longer! (What if they push it a bit later so it's more memorable for award nom season?)

It sounds like the film is something that really "sticks" with you so I think it'll be on the radar for awards season. I definitely can see it at the Independent Spirit Awards--and, fingers crossed, the Golden Globes and/or Oscars.
If Ellen Page is as impressive as they are saying, she at least will get a nod at the big awards shows.
As for security...if they make me wait too long, then my crack legal team will file suit my behalf seeking damages for the effect the delay had on my fragile emotional state.
Do you think they'll buy that...??? I mean...do you think I can sound convincing as an unbalanced person????????

I would love it if Ellen Page got some recognition for this! beacs knows this already, but, Tiff, Ellen Page is from Halifax!
No kidding, eh? That's exciting!
Beacs, I'm writing up our suit against the distributors as we speak! I don't know if they'll buy that fragile emotional state part though. If anyone seems "together", it's you!

Me and my "Troops" are a wonderful team.
I'm just not sure which one of us will be attending "Barefoot" in a few weeks.
Should I make Mister Wilson guess at the Stage Door??? :o)

Why at the stage door, when you've got all night to talk to him while he's chained in your closet?

LOL...
Do you think his wife will notice if he gets home a little later than usual--and is hoarse from singing the entire scores of POTO, Oklahoma, The Full Monty, and Bright Lights, Big City?

Has anyone checked whether the rumors that Patrick Wilson is taking a short hiatus from BAREFOOT IN THE PARK from 3/30-4/4?
Is there a reason why?

Here's a link to this blurb on www.contactmusic.com. Patrick really worked for "authenticity" in the table torture scene.
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA star PATRICK WILSON suffered for his art during torture scenes in a controversial new film - he blacked out while trying to pull a table across a kitchen. In HARD CANDY, the actor plays a pervert who befriends a 14-year-old girl on the internet and arranges a meeting at his home, only to have the teenager turn out to be more than he bargained for. And Wilson admits he took torture scenes in the film, during which he was tied to a table, too far at times. He explains, "I just said, 'Tie me down and put the phone over there and let me see if I can move the table to get to the phone. That table was about 600 or 700 pounds! "I wasn't going to be a chicken about what the physical demands were. I didn't spend time on how to rig the ropes (tying me down) so they wouldn't hurt me. I didn't make the table lighter or ask them to oil the wheels so I could move it. "You see my hands turn blue, which I didn't even know that was happening. I remember blacking out a couple of times. There was a real freedom in knowing that the role would take its toll on me emotionally and physically but tomorrow it's over."

HIFF Spring: Hard Candy
Posted by Greg May Apr 3, 12:18 PM to scenes : local
We had a rough week last week, what with flooding and Spring Break. But we’re back, and there’s nothing like a few good movies to make the weeks of rain fade away. We have some exciting stuff lined up for the next couple of weeks-
HIFF, the Hawaii International Film Festival, started on Friday and runs until April 6th. The lineup is pretty good- heavy on Asian films, as usual, but with plenty of premieres and interesting flicks. 26 films, 13 countries. The first film we’re looking at is one that we’ve been looking forward to for quite a while: the twisted thriller Hard Candy.
Hard Candy is the story of a teenage girl who meets a creep online and proceeds to meet him in real life- but knows what she’s doing, and turns the tables on him. As with most thrillers, the plot twists and turns; unlike many, there are only two real characters and the conflict reverses or avoids most stereotypical “movie logic”. Hence, it may be one of the better indie thrillers around, succeeding almost completely on the acting and dialogue.
It’s not a movie for everyone- certainly, viewers won’t be taking home a strong uplifting message. The modern moral dilemmas, so hackneyed in many films, are piercing here. Like other “difficult” films (Requiem for a Dream anyone?), you might not want to watch it again. But the first time is a blast, unique and powerful and everything movies can be, with a very focused view, only two real characters and a quality of writing that feels like a play.
