Yes, the Wizard's full name is Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkel Emmannuel Ambroise Diggs. He used the first two initials and called himself Oz (which is strange because The Land of Oz was already Oz before the Wizard appeared--again, whatever as Baum changed details like that a lot).

And Roscoe--Blasphemy (kidding). The MGM movie is perfection except for perhaps that one little detail. And yes, to me it is a minor little detail. No matter how MGM tried to present Dorothy's adventure, I always believed Judy Garland's Dorothy with all of my heart when she said that she was there and it was a real, live place--as I think did most of America and the World.

I'm a huge fan of the Oz books, the MGM film and a lot of other weird Oz stuff. I LOVE LOVE "Wicked" the book. The bway show was interesting. I think the MGM film and the Wicked bway show work well together. I liked the changes made to sync up with the film.

Schwartz says there will be an expanded ending in the film.

Elphaba gets fat?

Hopefully not that kind of expansion. re: Hardcore Oz fans feelings on Wicked

landryjames2---The mayor in the MGM movie sings: "As Mayor of the Munchkin City, in the county of the Land of Oz..." I guess that's how they know?

Although it sounds like the county is called the "Land of Oz" the way he says it.

That's why I don't choose to pick it apart!

George Lucas ultimately picked apart the Star Wars "legend" to the point that the details are all perfect, and the story is as BORING as a head of lettuce. I'm sure he lost a lot of sleep wondering if the Rebel Alliance's emblem was correct for a certain flashback scene. Too bad he didn't spend as much time on the scripts for the recent trilogy.

I'd rather see or hear a good story than get mired in "perfect details" any day.

EDIT: By the way, I kinda love the way Maguire gets the history of Oz into Wicked and embellishes it so beautifully. He talks about Pastoria and Lurline, etc. The prior rulers of Oz, and the creation and/or religious beliefs in Oz. Fascinating stuff... and it ties into the books so well!

You didn't think I wasn't going to weigh in on an "Oz" thread, did you?

Yes, the world of "Oz" and my childhood were pretty much the same. All the books (on into the Ruth Plumly Thompsons), the movie, the merchandise, the "Baum Bugle"--everything, even the awful movie version of "The Wiz". For that reason, I was extremely hesitant to read the novel "Wicked", thinking it would be a slap in the face to the Oz spirit and philosophy. But then I remembered that the Oz series often explored origin stories--the Tin Man's, the Good Witch of the North's (originally named "Tattypoo", of all things!), and the Wizard's--so why not the Wicked Witch. I thought the novel was fine, but that it ran out of invention by the end. I haven't seen the musical version.

I ask in all honesty/What would life be?/Without a song and a dance, what are we?/So I say "Thank you for the music/For giving it to me."
