I was on the boards at IMDB and found a link to this article. It seems like the studio is giving serious thought to doing the final movie in 2 parts, which might not be a bad idea since there is an awful lot of material to covered in the last book. According to the rumor mill, the studio is really trying to make an Oscar contender out of this movie and is looking for a big name director to helm the film.
I think I'd rather have a two-part film with most of the plot points intact than a two-and-a-half hour movie with a stripped down, bare-bones treatment of the plot.
Final Potter movie to be in two parts?

I don't see why they can't just make a 3 1/2 hour movie like "lord of the rings" The Potterheads won't mind the length. But we all know the studio just wants to make the most amount of money possible of the final installment of it's most lucrative enterprise.
either way, I will still see it.

That was my first thought, too, Pippin. Why not get two full releases instead of one - especially since successive releases have all pushed (or exceeded) a billion worldwide.

Posted: 1/16/08 at 1:20pmCan't they just edit out some of the interminable "wandering through the forest" stuff padding out the middle of that book?

Posted: 1/16/08 at 2:01pmCut the filler and make a two hour movie. Jettison Ron Leaving, Ron Coming back, The Wedding, Almost getting caught at Lovegood's, Almost getting eaten by the snake-lady....You could add a steamy love scene between young Dumbledore (James McAvoy) and Gridelwald (Julian Morris). Actually, that could be the second movie....

I'm guessing that some of stuff like The Wedding and the trio's time at Shell Cottage is gonna be cut anyway because Bill isn't in any of the previous movies, and it doesn't look like he'll be in the next one since he's not listed on IMDB.

I feel like I'm crazy. Everyone always complains about the camping sequence but it only accounts for like 200-300 pages of the book and it's broken up by Ron leaving, Godric's Hollow, Xenophilius Lovegood, Dumbledore's past, and other stuff... I guess I don't really see why everyone complains about that sequence.
Either way, I'm salivating at the prospect of them splitting it up into two movies and keeping complete fidelity. That would pretty much complete my life. Can't ever have too much Harry Potter.

Wasn't Goblet of Fire supposed to be split into two films because it was so dang long? And although it wasn't the most faithful of adaptations, it still worked on its own. To me, it's much more interesting to see how the new directors approach the material than it is to see a carbon-copy adaptation of the books (see Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets, the two most faithful yet least interesting films of the series).
Personally, I'd rather have a longer movie with more stuff in it than two seperate movies. Harry Potter 7: Part One and Part Two would really just annoy me to no end.

One film, please.
Keep the greed in check.
If you want the whole book, read the whole book. I'm very happy with the Potter films trimming what they have and keeping everything moving along. I haven't been checking my watch during any them, and I'd rather not start on the last one, please.
Or two or three.
Why don't they just make every chapter in it a two-hour movie?
Hey! And do it in the name of artistic integrity!
Yeah, right.

I don't think they can do it unless they make Harry an adult.
They're pushing their luck with the believability of his age as it is.

Thank you! I for one love that sequence, and don't think that it hinders the pacing of the book at all unless you're in a complete rush to get to the end (and even when I was the first time through, it was just as entertaining as the rest). There are such interesting character dynamics there, and I liked seeing how things got for the three kids, who were, we see, teenagerrs who have to shoulder burdens beyond their years. And I really hope the movies, which have shortchanged Ron/Rupert Grint throughout, do show the part with Ron leaving and coming back. I'd even go so far as to say I liked the hiding out in the forest segment of Deathly Hallows at least as much as and probably more than some of the long stretches of life-at-Hogwarts stuff in the earlier books. In any event, it certainly can't compare to the snooze-worthy "cleaning Grimmauld Place" section of relatively poorly-edited Order of the Phoenix.

Posted: 1/16/08 at 5:28pmI imagine if they go through with this, they'll film both at the same time (a la Lord of the Rings), so age shouldn't be a big issue. I doubt that Warner Brothers is having this thought due to artistic integrity, though. It's an easy way to double your profits.

I wish the studio would realize that people don't care how long it is, as long as it's good. These are people who will read an entire book in 24 hours, you're telling me they won't sit through a 3 hour movie?
Personally, I think I'd like to see one long movie rather than 2 halves of the story. The story builds so much that I think the first half could prove to be rather boring, and then the second half wouldn't have enough to ease you into the story, it would be all action. I want to see a big crescendo to the final battle and Harry's decision to "do what he has to do". I don't want to see a break in that big emotional journey.

Yeah I totally agree. I thought it was really suspenseful and exciting! It also gave us a lot of time to really focus on the main three. There are six books full of Life at Hogwarts so I liked that the seventh book deviated. I think the sixth movie will have a lot of Ron in it, I know there's going to be Quidditch. I think the last book actually does a really good job of giving every important character a final bow.
The thing is that the final sequence (from when they break into Gringotts to the end) is just really long and elaborate. I can't imagine where you'd even begin to start cutting. The final battle alone seems like it would take up a good hour of the movie. I can understand why they want to make two movies, they can just go for broke. So hopefully the studios don't listen to all you sourpusses :P I know there are definitely things in the fifth book, for example, that should have made it into the movie (like Ron joining the team).
