"I think that Snape will ultimately be the one to get rid of that last piece of V's soul -- it will look like he's attacking Harry, and maybe he will have to in order to destroy the soul, but it does fit with where the books are going. "

Interesting theory...
And if someone were to do it, I think it would definitely be Snape, as well. Man, he is such a great character!!

I just finished the book and have not looked all the way through this tread.
I totally agree with the last few posts about Snape, it was yodamarie who first brought up this Snape could have been following Dumbledore's orders idea and I amd still very much in favor of it. There has been so much invested in Snape over the books and DD must have some reason for trusting him, other than what Harry thinks, harry is almost always wrong.
I think just as DD told harry to do "whatever it takes" he did the same with Snape, I remember his original reluctance to make the unbreakable vow once Narcissa asked him to finish the job, but he did it because that was what DD ordered him to do. I'm also in total agreement on his pleading with Snape being that he go ahead and kill him. DD never struck me as one to plead FOR his own life.
Harry being the Horocrux I have yet to wrap my mind around, but i can see the possibility, although somehow I still see Harry surviving.

I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

The only way that JK could get away with 'killing' Harry would be if there is a mention in the Epilogue sugesting that he actually survived and only pretended to die so that he could find peace in anonymity at last (or rather, he could have been so injured that others made that choice for him).

eh. I still can't grasp Harry being killed or even pretending that he was killed. I think that Harry (with the help of Snape) will kill Voldemort and the Ministry of Magic will come up with a story so Harry won't be bombarded by adoring wizards and witches. And I agree that she better not just have Harry, Ron, and Hermoine go off on an adventure together.........Neville is one of my favorite characters so he better be in the next book (along with Hagrid) or I will not be a happy camper. I think it is really interesting about the "It could have been Neville" plot. I hope he some how fits into the story about how Voldemort goes down. That would rock!! And I hope Hermoine and Ron have one GOOD kiss in the last book. All this waiting is torture. re: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (SPOILER THREAD)

Book 7 is Rowling's chance to give all her characters one last hoorah, so I wouldn't worry about ones like Neville and Luna disappearing completely. I think the "houses uniting" theme will be important, too, so the 3 Gryffindors won't be doing it all.

Of course, I could be completely wrong, but those are the patterns I see. :)

I think the actor who played Neville has been peeing his pants ever since Neville started getting more and more importance...

i guess we all knew this was coming, but i didn't want to believe he was bad.
and he KILLED DUMBLEDORE. i can't believe he got away. and draco, of course, was expected.

harry and ginny was a bit weird, but also expected. i think i expected most of the major events in this book.

Book 7 will of course be harry beating voldemort. it would be a painful ending to a wonderful 7 book series (septsomething?) if voldemort beats harry.

what do y'all think the other corcruxes are?

Finished my second read of the book. Wooh.

1st I noticed a LOT of parallels between Harry and Snape. A LOT. I can't believe that Snape is just evil. He's too complicated and developed. Also, he ALWAYS protects Harry. Every book, every time, he protects Harry. When the siblings Crucio (yes?) Harry as he is trying to duel with Snape, Snape STOPS THEM immediatly and is very pissed off. And I am just beginning to realize something that I think is HUGE.

Voldemort told Lily she didn't have to die. He was honestly saying that. He wouldn't have killed Lily if she didn't force him to by protecting Harry. WHY? Maybe because Snape told Voldemort and asked only that Lily be spared. Get rid of the husband and kid, leave her open for Snape to sweep in. Mental, I know, but Snape (I think) loved her so much that he would do anything to get her. But when she was killed...he went back to Dumbledore.

JK is very careful when she talks about Lily. And about Snape.

Also I am now POSITIVE that Dumbledore and Snape had a plan and that Dumbledore was asking Snape to kill him, not save him.

2nd something cute, in the first potions class both Harry and Hermione smell something of their beloved (Hermione stops saying what she smells from the love potion and blushes...suggesting she smells something Ron-ish, and Harry smells the rose smell of Ginny, tho he doesn't recognize it then).

3rd I do think it will be Malfoy who teaches at Hogwarts after everything is done. Him or Hermione...or Neville. Hmm. Got a couple good prospects for that one.

4th If Harry is a horcruxe (sp?), and I'm still not sure if he is, then I think Snape will destroy that part of Voldemorts soul, seeming to be attacking Harry, and get killed because of it. Maybe. And then he reveals his love for Lily. Maybe. Hmm.

That's all I can think of at this point.

I agree with previous posters that Snape and Dumbledore had already agreed that Snape would kill Professor D. I also think that the Horcrux was the liquid and not the locket and that's why Dumbledore, realizing this, asked harry to kill him while he was being fed the liquid at the cave.

I also agree that Dumbledore was not begging for his life but begging Snape to kill him, he insisted that Harry fetch Snape because he knew Harry would never kill Dumbledore and thus the Horcruz or whatever would not be destroyed.

I was betting that Voldemort would turn out to be the HBP, but oh surprise. It makes no sense to me that Dumbledore trusted Snape so much if there wasn't a powerful and hitherto unrevealed reason why Dumbledore always turned to Snape and called for him in his final moments. I think harry will kill Draco in the next book and will realize that Snape was really good after all.

While the liquid-as-Horcrux theory is interesting, that is not possible because "RAB" already took away the horcrux.

Ok...now that I could finally finish my book...my original copy was missing the last 20 pages.....I have to say it was wonderful.

Anyone else find it interesting that the cover of the book was green...which are Slytherin's house colors, and Snape was head of Slytherin, and the Half-Blood Prince? (Which didn't surprise me, BTW)

When I first started reading about horcruxes, my brain flashed back to the mirror that Sirius gave Harry in OoTP. Could that be one?

I never would have guessed Snape as the HBP. I always assumed he was a full-blood.

I still believe that Snape is a good guy. He'll prove himself in book 7.

I agree about the statement of Snape and Dumbledore... but I don't understand how Snape would have been able to keep the secret hidden from Voldemort. It seemed that Dumbledore had this planned the entire time, and we dont' really know anything about Snape. It seems that Dumbledore knew that Draco wasn't going to kill him... now I didn't read this entire thread, but I'm assuming most others are saying that Dumbledore was a hocrux. I just don't understand why he had to be killed so quickly, but I just knew that he was going to be killed in this book.

I like the Ginny/Harry, and I was waiting for Ron/Hermione since the first book, so hopefully that will end up developing. I am glad it wasn't with Luna because she seems to kind of annoy me most of the time, and then the rest of the time I feel bad for her.

I agree... they seem to be on the same page. Definitely both weird in their own senses, but Neville should get some action too! re: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (SPOILER THREAD) I like that idea, but I want to know what happens with Lupin and Tonks. Is that why she was suddenly stressed all the time? I would like to think that she was also depressed because of Sirius.

I have a question...were Tonks and Sirius cousins??? Because I thought they said they were in the 5th book, but then in the 6th book people thought that Sirius and Tonks were secretly in love.

Maybe Sirius' death made Lupin want to be more cautious about his loved ones. Maybe he told Tonks after Sirius' death that they couldn't be involved anymore. (like Harry told Ginny after Dumbledore's death) I don't know....its all speculation.

What about Fleur? Do you think she could have been placed close to the Weasleys by Voldemort? I wasn't buying her love at the end.

Really? I was. I haven't seen any indications at all that she's evil- a bit of a snob, but never actually bad. What in her behavior makes you think she's a mole?

[new to this thread]

Just going to jump in and say I agree with plum... there was never any indication of Fleur being "evil" in any sense. I guess it makes sense why you are cautious of her, and that she is all of a sudden a more prominent character in the book, but it didn't seem that there was any reason to suspect her. In the 4th book, there was even suspicion of Krum, but never of her. You never know with these books though... she manages to twist and turn the plot around through subtle indications throughout each of the books.

I just read this ENTIRE THREAD.

Even though I was at B&N at midnight with my HP wristband to get the book, this was the first book of the 6 that I didn't finish right away--I've been swamped and ( *blasphemes* ) didn't finish until Monday night!!

That said.....I am SO GLAD to have read all of these theories. I knew there had to be more to it than just "Oh, Snape really IS evil after all" after all that.

Keep the theories coming!!

My first thought when reading Dumbledore's death, was that there was some sort of worst-case scenario arranged between Dumbledore and Snape that was ultimately played out. Snape had plenty of opportunities to kill Dumbledore, so why did it have to be in the moment when Draco was the one who had to do it? The Unbreakable Vow was about protecting Draco, not performing his duties, which in this case, would not have necessarily protected Draco from Voldermort. Snape only had to get Draco out of there. There was something more deliberate and ceremonious in Dumbledore's death. Also, I don't think Dumbledore's trust in Snape was explicitly explained. There was a somewhat wishy-washy vague answer, but I believe it goes deeper than that. I really don't think Dumbledore was so naive to have Snape working for Voldermort under his nose for so many years. Nor do I think any of the characters would believe Dumbledore is that stupid.

I think all this joy over the Lupin/Tonks thing is kind of funny. I mean, Tonks has been such a peripheral character, I'm not sure why anyone would get excited about her being in a relationship.

Personally, I wanted to see Harry and Hermione together, even though I knew it would never happen. They just seem a better match than Ron and Hermione. I mean, I could see H/H as parents together. It just makes more sense to me. But I like Ginny, too. She's a delightful character.

I had no idea Snape would be the Half-Blood Prince. I did not see that coming at all.

I am curious how they will film the movie of this one considering the quite bloody and violent scenes (especially with Harry and Malfoy). The movies have been more kid-friendly than the books, so I wonder if it will be less bloody. That part really freaked me out when I read it.

I think the Harry-Malfoy scene is small beans compared with the scene in the Horcrux cave, which was absolutely harrowing without any blood.
