I know that the original musical ending was filmed for the movie version, but didn't get good audience reaction at screenings.
Was anyone part of those screenings or have you been able to see it through another means?
I would love to get some feedback on what you thought of it and why you think it was cut.
I'm surprised it wasn't included in the DVD. I would love to have seen it.

I saw it online a couple years ago, but I have no idea where it was. The original ending was put on the DVD, but without the permission of David Geffin (I believe), and so the DVD was pulled off the shelves after two days. There are a handful of copies floating around, sometimes appearing on ebay.
I prefer the alternate ending because it pushes home the message of the story.

Posted: 12/4/05 at 8:12pmI've seen it, it used to be up on the Alan Menken website to download (or something like that). I think it was great, and definitely preferable over what they changed it to. I wish I could've seen what it looked like with all the effects done. The Audrey II's creeping up onto the Statue of Liberty was really cool. But it's obvious why it was cut - it's just too...depressing.

Posted: 12/4/05 at 8:15pmI have seen it, its a rough cut in b/w and it begins from when seymour is trying to kill audrey II with the gun, the it tries to eat audrey and seymour feeds her to him and he runs up to the roof wanting to commit suicide but there is a salesman up there trying to get him to sell the plants, seymour runs back downstairs to try to kill the plant eventually he is killed and the plants overtake the world and the song don't feed the plants is played, better than the other ending in my opinion. it was on the original DVD but it wasn't approved and when Frank Oz found out he had it taken off shelves immediatly. Those who were able to get a copy were lucky and you might be able to find one on ebay for a large sum of money.

Posted: 12/4/05 at 8:26pmIt was rumored that it was pulled because Geffen was planning on restoring it and doing a rerelease, but this was years ago. I did manage to stumble on a copy of it after the recall in a store in the mall. I couldn't believe I found one that slipped through the cracks and only had to pay like thirteen bucks for it.

RentBoy86, the "alternative" movie ending is the real ending used in both the original and the revival stage versions.
Reportedly, test movie audiences disliked the downer of an ending (remember, actors on film don't give curtain calls to let the audience know it's all just a show), so the studio pressured Frank Oz to reshoot the new ending.

Posted: 12/5/05 at 1:12amI had the original ending, which I downloaded when it was temporarily up on an Alan Menken site, but my hard-drive crashed and I lost it along with all my other things of awesomeness. I do remember that parts of it freaked me the hell out (Audrey's hand lying out of the plant's mouth as he eats her, the Audrey II on the Statue of Liberty, Seymour comtemplating jumping from the building). Also I thought the scenes of the plants destroying the city went on for too long, but it wasn't final cut anyway, so. It was a very dark ending and I see why they would change it, but some people go for the total messed up-ness of the original.

Little known fact about reshooting the original ending: One of the Urchins was unable to return 6 monthes later which is why the camera pans down to the last girl's leg before we see the new Twoey smiling before the credits (THAT leg belonged to one of the crew girls)

I've never seen it, but it says on the DVD that it was cut because the audience at the previews walked out horrified that the main characters were killed. "In the stage play, you know that the actors are coming out for a curtain call, but these movie characters are so real and then they just die" (or something like that) is what one of the guys said.
I don't really like the movie as much - the original ending is awesome. :P But the the baby Audrey II (Audrey III?) was a cute idea.
I remember days
Or at least I try
But as years go by
They're sort of haze
And the bluest ink
Isn't really sky
And at times I think
I would gladly die
For a day of sky

its on the movie the original shotty one that they made.
you can usually find them at movie rental places that carry strange movies..but as far as i know thats only on vhs.
yeah, its "depressing" but the movie is called little shop of horrors. the dvd remake ending was pretty good in itself they still stuck to a good story line and it made perfect sense.
i like them both.
