Does he qualify as a star these days?

Posted: 11/28/08 at 12:19pmI guess I should clarify: Rosie is the biggest star I can think of who has no identifiable talent. Sure Joy Behar or Lance Bass has minimal gifts, but they aren't multi-format A listers like Rosie.

Conan O'Brian is only slightly more talented than Ms. O'Donnell. (But not by much) I can't believe they are giving him the tonight show. Yet, even though I dislike him, I felt sorry for him on the Rosie show. I felt sorry for all the guest stars. They were not responible for that dreck.
Less talented than Rosie O'Donnell? I really can't think of anyone currently, who is as big of a STAR as Rosie. Not to speak ill of the dead, but I always thought Chris Farley was untalented. But he didn't strike me as a meanspirited person. I'd watch 10 Chris Farley variety shows, before I'd watch another Rosie O'Donnell variety show.

Golly George, thank you to whoever brought up Vanessa Hudgens. She has one facial expression, one vocal intonation, and the most nasal voice I've ever heard. She's gorgeous, and I like High School Musical, but Miss Hudgens is definitely the biggest detractor.
And I think Paris Hilton is pretty much the least talented star I can think of. But Rosie is up there.

Posted: 11/28/08 at 3:03pmI concur that Rosie was really funny when she was on Star Search. Loved watching her on that when I was in college. I also liked her talk show during it's first couple of years. To me things went down hill for her after she had Tom Selleck on her show.

I loved Rosie in "A League of Their Own," but that's really about it.
I concur with Vanessa Hudgens and Paris Hilton being much less talented.

Rosie used to be funny ages ago, until she began to develop a mean undercurrent. Now, it's out of control. It's taken over as her dominating characteristic as a performer.
She can't tell a joke or cast off a one-liner without looking like she's going to beat you up if you don't laugh at it. She's way too confrontational these days, even when she's "supposedly" having so much fun, doing what she loves to do.
Entertainment by intimidation. Just wonderful.
I'd like to see her walk out on stage just once without looking like she just had a huge fight with someone in the wings, and she's trying to rise above it and go on with the show.
Not exactly a great "stage persona."

To me the daytime talk show went downhill when she added the craft corner segment, or whatever she called it.
The fact of the matter is, all comedy has a kernel of hostility in it, and when Rosie pushed the queen of nice thing on the daytime talk show it was a drastic shift from her standup days. I know, because I saw her in a tiny club years before she was out, or had adopted her first kid. She was caustic, and hilarious.
I believe that she left the talk show once she had completely painted herself into a corner with the niceness thing. She went back to how she really is, which FREAKED so many people out after they had considered her their personal avuncular friend who came into their living room five days a week and showed them how to do fun things with yarn and a glue gun while shooting Koosh balls at them.
A separate point from this is that variety show is a dead language, like Latin. It can't be revived, no matter how rosey the colored glasses some people wear to look back at the memories of variety show pleasures of the past.

Posted: 11/30/08 at 6:49pmthe problem i have with Rosie O'Donnell is that she still has baggage... and it makes her this angry and bitter woman... i don't get it really... this woman has money, is a celebrity, has awards, children, wrote a book where she spills her secrets, is out and proud... its like what other freaking baggage do you have left in your life that you won't tell us so you won't stop being an angry ****!

lasagna-you should have seen the art show of her paintings at New World Stages. The one remark most people had was "they're angry."
Indeed they were.
