They are very picky about What Not to Wear. One of my college roommates dressed like a 12-year-old, including when she had to go do professional work experience. She also didn't get the concept that wearing a plain shirt with jeans to a party was acceptable. I think a couple of friends tried to get her on, but it never came of anything. That's actually not that surprising. There must be so many people nominated for the show, and I know they do makeovers in groups, almost. They film all of the befores in the area and then bring them to New York (probably also together). I bet if they have a general idea of where they want to go at different points in the season, they don't even consider people from outside those geographic areas.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.
