"But I was on Jeopardy Kids' Week when I was twelve years old... that was a lot of fun, it was a chance for me to take my first trip to a Disney park, and it's covering my first year of college."
That's sooooo cool! I've always wanted to go on that show. I actually tried out for Jeorpardy College Week two years ago. The questions they asked were much harder than the ones you see on the show. Hence, I didn't make it. Lol

My aunt tried out for biggest loser but she, who lost 30 lbs prior to the tryout, was denied since she lost 'too much' weight beforehand.
I did know a family, rather the kids, who got to be on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Our area was in this frenzy during the whole process. But then people found out why, aside from the house's sinking foundation, they were selected and it was that the single mother adopted HIV+ children (on top of the fact a couple of the kids had mental disabilities) in addition to her own biological son. Then I heard people's ignorance about HIV/AIDS, snarking about how 'trashy' the family was (this was at a friggin family dinner table of so-called liberals), and how exploiting it was to publicize the children (nobody mentioned the contractor who designed the house used the exposure to jump-start his political career in the state assembly since he was just being philanthropic/sarcasm). Sadly the family had to move out of the McMansion house they got out of it, luckily the kids got good college funds.
So yeah, I was turned off to the idea of going on a reality show, or anybody in my family knowing how even the 'tight-knit community' that surrounded that family was a lot of BS. Still feel bad for what I heard when they were on that trip to Disney World.

Jealous!
I've never been on a reality show, but one of my cousins is going to be on that 24 Hour Restaurant Challenge show on Food Network. She and her boyfriend are going to be customers of one of the restaurants.

When "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" came to a town near my school, I, along with several other students somehow got roped into designing the wall treatment for a room - Ty Pennington's room, in fact. Going into it, I knew that these kinds of shows were "staged", but I was actually given lines to say and "blocking" by the show's director and producers. We even filmed a "scene" where Ty came up with the idea for the room's wall treatment, yet we had already designed it several days before. It was sad when we spent an entire evening working on the room and the only footage they showed was Ty working on it - they had him come in five minutes before it was finished and filmed him working for about 3 seconds.
Despite all of that, it was definitely a fun experience, and the family really deserved all the hard work that went into the home!

I seem to remember hearing other stories about people having to sell the houses that had been build for them because they couldn't afford the cost of keeping them up (taxes and the like). I seem to recall one family trying to sue the show.

Yeah, people who have the home make-overs done for them get hit with all the taxes when the show is over. Some even are forced to sell their homes because they can't afford them afterwards.
You get $125,000 renovation done to your house you pay taxes on that renovation. Your property value goes up because of said improvements so do your property taxes.

Posted: 8/8/10 at 11:51amWith Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, it not only leaves the owner saddled with all the new taxes associated with the suddenly drastically increased property value, it also screws the neighbors over as well, since the surrounding properties are considered when determining the property value of your home. For all the good the show appears to do it has a lot of potentially negative consequences.

I'm not sure I would ever want to be on a reality show...something about it just doesnt appeal to me. But if the right one came along I may change my mind...
I would consider going on one of those makeover shows. Not EM:HE but one of the ones where they help you do one room in your house.

Posted: 8/8/10 at 3:22pmExtreme Makeover put a 100 gallon salt water aquarium in the home of a man who lost both legs in Iraq. Do you know how much that costs to maintain? They built to within 5 feet of the property lines. The little girl mentioned liking Dr. Seuss, so she ended up with a room that looked like it was straight out of Whoville. She said she LIKED it, but not enough to have a red and white striped plush dresser anchored to her wall. The "stars" of the show are just that and only come out to film or pump up the crowd, especially Ty. If you like the show NEVER volunteer for it. It will ruin it for you.

Yeah, I can't imagine- no matter how 90s nostalgic I am- that my Nickelodeon cartoons obsession at a young age got my bedroom the EM:HE treatment.
The youngest kid of the house was a 'tweener and liked the Philadelphia Eagles so while some of the stuff he got was great the design of the room I can imagine could become extremely infantile once he reached HS age.
The mother, as mentioned, was a single mom who while probably did get support from the state to raise the kids she adopted but in no way could she maintained that home with just her job.

Not been on any, but if my brother-in-law wants to apply for Coach Trip, I've already volunteered to go with (my sister loves watching it but would hate to go on it). I also have a Come Dine with Me menu prepared in my head on the offchance my local area is ever selected for an episode. :)

Yeah, I don't think I'd want a Broadway themed room...
Wait, on second thought that might be awesome.

I really would love to be on What Not to Wear, but I don't think my clothes are bad enough.

Posted: 8/8/10 at 11:44pmThey are very picky about What Not to Wear. One of my college roommates dressed like a 12-year-old, including when she had to go do professional work experience. She also didn't get the concept that wearing a plain shirt with jeans to a party was acceptable. I think a couple of friends tried to get her on, but it never came of anything.

I don't think I dress poorly either but I'd be curious as to what they'd have to say.
