I was at a carnival today with my little sister and Zero Gravity broke down as it was going up. It took them 20 mineutes to get us all off.
My aunt and uncle got stuck on De Javu when it broke down. They were halfway upsidedown.

Went to Dorney Park my sophmore year of high school and it was a rainy day, so it wasn't as fun as it could have been. Anywho, me and my friend Steve decide to go on Talon one more time and he decides to say as the coaster is going up the hill something around the lines of "Watch the coaster get stuck", and low and behold, the coaster stopped. I immediately turned to him and screamed, "Damn You Steve." We were sitting there for probably ten minutes and since it was raining and there was puddles of water on top of the train already, rain water from atop came splashing down on us.
At Disney, me, my mom, and my sisters went on Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, the ride stopped halfway through in the most annoying part of the ride. You enter a room with a video screen and they have this guy come on saying, come on you can't hit me or something like that, and we were stuck there for probably ten minutes and hearing that repeated was just annoying, but we passed the time by playing with the lever that made the car turn.

Yeah, but I bet you weren't stuck in that part of the ride. It got really, really annoying and the lasers didn't shut off completely. Like if I remember it correctly, they would come on for a period of time and then shut off.
I'm just glad I was never stuck in Small World for a long period of time. I think hearing that song repeatedly for more than ten minutes would've have driven me insane.

Posted: 5/18/08 at 12:07amI remember I was walking out of the Cat In The Hat ride when Islands Of Adventures first opened (a month after) and a commercial was being shot. It involved a family run off chessily and a young boy (or girl?) waving to the camera. Basically one of those "Come On!" kind of waves. Pointless post, I know.

Posted: 5/18/08 at 12:07amI've never had that happen, but I'd probably be freaked out if I was on a ferris wheel and it broke down while I was in mid-air.

3 years ago me and my friends got stuck going up the hill of the Rebel Yell at Kings Dominion. We had to wait about 20 minutes for the mechanics to come and individually unlock our restraints. We got a coupon from the park for a free meal so it turned out okay though.
Another time, me and my family were at Disney World riding Spaceship Earth at Epcot and the whole ride, animatronics and all, just stopped. It restarted though after a couple minutes. But it was freaky seeing everything just grind to a halt. They never did tell us what happened either.

Small World Ride. 25 minutes, and we could see the exit too.
To make matters worse, a member of our group made a VERY inappropriate comment about the girl who strokes the rooster and it's neck extends...we wanted to *die*
At least it had a/c.

Posted: 5/18/08 at 2:19amSmall World, but for less than husk charmers. More like 10 minutes at the part where they have goodbye in every language. Some rides stopping would scare me, like Pirates of Caribbean, or a transition in Small World. Feel like there's been more.

I was stuck in Pirates of the Caribbean at Disney World last time I was there. Of course, we had the good fortune to be stuck in the dark as well!
James, I had a similar experience on Spaceship Earth, but the animatronics didn't stop moving. We were in a part of the ride with chanting monks, I was thoroughly freaked out.

I went to DisneyWorld in January with my family and foolishly let my father convince me to go in the Haunted Mansion. I was crying when we got into the room with the "stretching walls". I've read all about the ride, know the tricks they do, probably could've told my dad all about it, but for some reason I was just freaking out (especially because there were no doors and I don't like crowds). I ended up spending the whole ride with my face buried in my dad's shoulder and my hands firmly over my ears. I don't know why I was so scared...it's not like it's a really terrifying ride.
But the best - and most relevant - part was when we got stuck! If I wasn't hysterical before, then the idea of being stuck in some place full of ghosts and skeletons and freaky music really freaked me out. Thank goodness we were only stuck for about two minutes. I thought maybe it was planned, even, like you "get stuck" and something scary happens. That would've been okay. But nope. We had to really get stuck. I think I would've had to go to the hospital if we'd been stuck in there for twenty minutes, haha.
And then when we finally get off, I go to look for the ring in the pavement - pretty much the only reason I got on the ride, so I could go see the ring at the end - and some lady tells me it's gone! It's on the bride's finger now. I guess I knew that. "Didn't you see, on her finger?" she asked. Ummm...yes. Because...I was looking...with my eyes open. Right.

Posted: 5/18/08 at 3:26amI got stuck in the Carousel of Progress for about a minuet. It was during the scene changes and there was a stop for a moment. We could see both scenes going on at once.

I was stuck once when I was younger in the Haunted Mansion right in front of the old door in the hallway of knockers that would expand out as if something was pressing really forcefully against it. That was pretty creepy.
The worst I've ever been stuck was on Splash Mountain right before the drop into the Laughing Place. We sat there for ten minutes, then another ten with the lights on and the next ten with the sound and everything turned off and announcements to the crew being spoken over the speaker. By the end of it, the ride was pretty backed up before the final drop and when we got off, they gave us a free pass to any ride in the park we wanted.

Posted: 5/18/08 at 8:11amI wasn't stuck, but I was standing outside of the tilt--a-whirl at a carnival once when it malfunctioned. One of the cars slammed on its back and slid across the floor. If there wasn't a metal fence up around the ride, I would have been crushed. Luckily the people inside were uninjured, but it was still one of the scariest things I've witnessed.

Posted: 5/18/08 at 12:58pmI got stuck on the lift hill of Shock Wave at Great America in Gurnee, IL (same ride as Great American Scream Machine at Great Adventure) for about half an hour. Since we were so high up the lift, the mechanics had to come up and help us up out of the seats and then all the way down the steep, rickety stairs on the sides of the lift hill. We got free passes to the front of the line of any ride in the park.

Although this doesn't qualify as a malfunction, or break-down story it was memorable.
Way back in 1974 my partner and I took our first vacation together to Ponce, Puerto Rico. We booked in a hotel that our travel agent said was located "right on the beach" well...guess what? It wasn't. It wasn't even close. It was a nice hotel, but not at all what we were expecting. It was chock full of straight white Americans couples, who did nothing but stare at the two men who were sharing a room. It was a tad uncomfortable to say the least. We befriend, or were befriended by a very nice black couple from Chicago, who were equally uncomfortable with the stares and attitude that they were receiving as well.
Since during the evenings it was not much fun to hangout at the hotel, my partner and I invited the couple to come with us to a carnival that was passing through town. We left the hotel shortly after dinner, for what we hoped would be a fun evening.
The Carnival it's self was typical of most small traveling amusements. A tilt-whirl, octopus, ferris wheel, and a carnival swing. A few smaller rides and booths...and that was about it.
We all opted to start the evening on the Carnival Swing, since we'd just had dinner, and weren't really up to the octopus. So, we all boarded our individual swings and started what we thought would be a brief and tame ride.
Shortly after the ride started at mini-riot broke out. Someone had pick-pocketed someone's wallet and a large crowd of people began chasing the thief through the Carnival. Unfortunately for us, the operator of the ride joined in the chase. Sooooo...we were left on the ride for about 20 minutes...just going around...and around...and around....we could see the crowd as they moved across the carnival...each revolution found them heading in a different direction...no one of course was interested in us. Eventually, the attendant did come back. And we were relased from our whirling hell. Without saying a word to each other...we headed back to our car and drove straight back to the hotel.
The rest of the vacation...didn't get any better. But that's another story.
