HONG KONG - The survival of the human race depends on its ability to find new homes elsewhere in the universe because there's an increasing risk that a disaster will destroy the Earth, world-renowned scientist Stephen Hawking said Tuesday.
The British astrophysicist told a news conference in Hong Kong that humans could have a permanent base on the moon in 20 years and a colony on Mars in the next 40 years.
(isn't that disaster George Bush?)

He's right, of course.
Then again, in four billion years, our sun is going to swell into a red giant and incinerate Earth, so we'd better have interstellar travel down pat by then. And then there's always the chance of the "big crunch."

Oh, yes, that's exactly what we need to do - because we've done such a spectacular job here on this planet, we should spread the joy. Kind of like the US does around the world.
For once, I think I'm actually happy that most people don't really hear or understand what Mr. Hawking has to say.

Posted: 6/13/06 at 10:55amIf the earth is going to be destroyed, there is probably a good reason. And we are probably all supposed to be destroyed with it!
#6hawking says humans must go into space
Posted: 6/13/06 at 10:59amMmm...perhaps. But doesn't it give a sense of futility that everything good that humankind has ever produced -- all the art, architecture, music, philosophy, history, knowledge -- could be wiped out, not leaving a trace of our existence? Shouldn't any species' goal ultimately be its own survival?

It would be sad, yes. But necessary.
I was at that show's final performance. What fun!

lol, that would be gross, Calvin. I want the memory of such beautiful shows like "Brooklyn" and "In my Life" to be accessable to all aliens who feel interested in it

This discussion makes me think of this song:
Well, I'd like to visit the moon
On a rocket ship high in the air
Yes, I'd like to visit the moon
But I don't think I'd like to live there
Though I'd like to look down at the earth from above
I would miss all the places and people I love
So although I might like it for one afternoon
I don't want to live on the moon
