Headshots questions
#1Headshots questions
Posted: 6/5/07 at 12:08amNow that I'm graduating, I need to get my headshots taken. My prof suggested that I contact a few casting directors and ask who they like in order to find a photographer. Does it matter if the casting director is more film oriented? I mainly want to do theatre. Please help. Thanks :)

Posted: 6/5/07 at 12:34amIf you have a subscription to backstage.com, do a search in the archives for Best of New York. It is a feature they do every year that covers everything you could imagine. I know they discuss photographers, and people who have used those photographers give their reviews. This would be a good place too start. As far as B&W vs. color, I think it varies on what casting directors prefer, but I think for theatre the preference has been learning towards color if I'm not mistaken. I hope this helps!

Posted: 6/5/07 at 4:00pmI can't really answer your question, but when you do get your headshots taken, get them in color. That's what starting to be perfered. You can always change them to black and white if needed. Also make sure you don't wear anything too lowcut.

If you are in New York, go down to Reproductions on I think it is 40 and 6th (right next to Bryant Park). They have books upon books of almost all the photographers in NYC with samples of their work. That way you can see what you like and something that you think will be best for you.
This is my philosophy, I think your headshot should look like you on a good day, that way when you go to auditions the casting people will see what they really are going to get. I also would say Color, you don't see many requests in casting calls for black and white.
