Posted: 10/29/14 at 4:22pmI'm thinking the 2014 theater-going budget might have gone a long way to paying for books and maybe a class or two?

I love this thread, so I'm thankful to that money grubbing Brit!
I had the same reaction! You can fly to NYC and see the hottest show in town, but you need to beg for money online?

I'm not offended, just a bit taken aback.
I know it's cheeky, and I'm not expecting anything to come of this, I just thought that people who are in this field may understand how difficult it is to get opportunites like this, and how funding them can be hard. Obviously I was wrong.
DramaMama - I use BWW every day; it's my homepage and I've been a member since 2006. And yes, probably I should be a little less sensitive.
FindingNamo - not that it's really any of your business, but I booked my trip to NY, including all show tickets in February, before I even applied for Royal Welsh.
Phyllis Rogers Stone - maybe I will make that movie. Maybe...

I actually figured you probably spent all that money before you even got into the school. I myself meant to put a little money away every month for when the time came that I needed to replace my car but the expenses of life and devotion to good theater kind of etched away at that and last night I got home and my car transmission started acting up. Bad. And I wish I had managed to put that money away.
What I think about your situation is, it sucks, but sometimes we have to miss out on things because we just can't pay for them. And maybe we could have if we had saved up over time.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that all my other sources of fundraising are going to go successfully. There's a scholarship audition soon; we shall see.
Until then I know where not to come to ask for donations.

Oh, Luke, just take the ribbing. You earned it. I tend to agree with Namo re: accepting that some things are just out of reach. When I was young and dumb (and thought a career in the theatre was something I should pursue), I got accepted into one the big top 5 conservatories in the US, but couldn't afford to go even after earning two scholarships and deferring my enrollment for a year to scrimp up some savings through a minimum wage job at Clothestime. You guys remember Clothestime? Well, now I own 5 Clothestimes franchises in eastern Pennsylvania and live very comfortably in a gated community with my wife Betsy and our twin daughters. That never would have happened if I'd gone to acting school.
Good luck with the auditions etc, but if you have real, undeniable talent, perhaps you don't need to attend such a costly program to make this dream a reality. Just a thought.

Sticking with the title of the thread I thought this might be very helpful in getting to Royal Welsh. All the ways to get there.

There's a difference between VISITING and PARTICIPATING. Your PARTICIPATION would hardly constitute you as any sort of regular.
I guess it just takes some big balls to ask strangers to personally help you financially, especially with something that is not a necessity...like food or shelter or medicine.
Funny, I was taught to be patient and work hard for the things I wanted...not ask the world to take care of it for me. And yes, I paid for undergraduate and graduate school without any help from my parents or strangers.
and I agree with the others that for someone scrimping and saving, you certainly seemed to attend an awful lot of theater. Oh, poor you.

So the fact that I don't post on the forum every single day means that I can't start a thread? The main reason I don't spend all of my spare time on the forums is that the West End board is fairly quiet and dull these days, and I tend to avoid the Broadway and Off-Topic boards for fear of entering situations like this one.
An overwhelming amount of people who are raising money for further studies use websites as a source of getting some extra funds. And I'm not going to explain my financial situation to you, but I will say that most of the theatre I see is fairly cheap, and I've managed to save a huge amount of money myself towards college, this is just a way of trying to get something extra in case I can't get the bank loan or scholarship.
I've already said that it's obvious I shouldn't have posted this at all, so I don't know why you're so angry.

I personally don't think there's any litmus test for participation amount or what "counts" as a membership on the board. I think a start date of '06 and legend status means you're a BWWer.
There's this thing happening with a lot of the millennial generation in the US, luke, with young people having a certain level of entitlement that their expectations will be met because they deserve to have them met because they said so. It's happened before here on this board. One kid who had NEVER posted here wanted financial help but for a crappy place here in the US.
I have kickstarted actual projects in the past, where I get something for my money. An artist needs help completing a recording? I'll chip in if I get a copy of the recording? I'll chip in more if I get a signed copy, etc.
Most people don't just hand over money to people they don't know unless there's something compelling. Like, money for an organ transplant. I don't think many people have spare money for what you want.
