There are two I reccommend:
What to Expect When You're Expecting

Posted: 8/14/11 at 11:52amIf you're considering this as a recommendation for your friend, the two recommended above are fine. However, if you're looking for a gift, I'd recommend anything EXCEPT a book like this. A much better gift for her would be some sort of pampering, like a day spa gift cert. She's in for years of putting her kid(s) needs before her own, so anything that she can do just for herself now would be a bonus.

But if her friend is a first time mom -- her brain is all about baby and these things are all she can think about! (Your point is well taken - maybe get her a pregnancy massage when she's about 7 months preggers...she'll need it)
If its for a gift let me add: the FIRST book I listed is the first book everyone gets -- so she likely already has it.
The second book is a little less known. I loved it since there was a little something to catch up on each week as compared to the monthly info in the other. One of my favorite parts was the 2nd book always compared the size of the baby to real life things: usually food. It was a real way to understand and it made grocery shopping more fun!

Posted: 8/14/11 at 2:48pmThis friend isn't pregnant yet, just starting the process and wanting to read everything she can get her hands on. She's not wanting to put the cart before the horse, so to speak, but she's a big reader and likes to be prepared. What To Expect was the first purchase.

I got this book for my cousin when she got pregnant with her first child. It's less about "what to do" but something nice to sit down with to forget some of the stress
ETA: A friend of mine enjoyed Jenny McCarthy's books. Less clinical and more humorous look at pregnancy.
Chicken Soup for the Expectant Mother's Soul

From my pregnant friends - they have all advised against "What to expect" as it's very - in their words - condescending and scary as a resource and isn't organized well.
Conversely - they all praise the Mayo Clinic's book...
