re: Highlights from the Joan Rivers Friar's Roast

"I was disgusted and appalled by the joke about Mario Cantone's T-cells. I think that no-name woman should have been booed for that"

I thought it was quite offensive, we were 3 "HIV neg" guys watching the show and we felt it was too much.
But then I called my ex, who is positive and he said he loved that joke! LOL! I'm a fan of Whitney Cummings but I felt it was a little bit of a cheap shot.
But it's supposed to be offensive and tacky. So it was just fine. Whitney is always very supportive of the gay community on Chelsea Lately.

If you were offended by the content of the roast, NEVER EVER go to a Lisa Lampanelli show. She does all of that and more....

I think it's freaking hilarious!!! LOL!!!

Paljoey, just don't watch them EVER again. It's obviously not your thing. Don't waste your time.

Pal Joey I've often respected your opinion and loved reading your stories. But your "my opinion or the highway" attitude is narcissistic and patronizing. To each their own. I'm allowed to find these jokes funny just as you're allowed to loathe them. But just because you think it doesn't mean it's the final and only word on the subject.

I have HIV and my partner is F to M and I didn't have a problem with any of those jokes. Are you entitled to loathe them, yes. But don't condemn someone for enjoying them. I find it refreshing. These performers obviously don't have those opinion. They're walking a thin line between humorous and offensive and I think more comics should be taking those risks-swim or sink.

Color me confused as well, PRS. And I hope confused is a dark-greenish shade, as that's the color I look best in.

If you want a better view of the Friar's Roasts and the racism involved, watch this video. Now, WARNING!!! It's Katt Williams. Every other word is offensive and it's not safe for work. I had a very, "Oh, it's all in fun," attitude toward the roasts and, "they're all in on the joke." Not according to Katt.

I get confused by a lot on BWW these days though. I think I'm not on enough, so the relationships and dynamics change without notice. There should be email alerts sent out. "Today, Namo is being sincere." "Today, Namo is being sarcastic." "Today, MrRoxy has not yet stuck a fork in anything."

And I agree with you PRS. You're right, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN should have won the Oscar. A very good point.

Thought it was appallingly hilarious. It's the highest form a flattery to a comedian to be roasted by their peers. It's supposed to be in the worst possible taste. (Have you ever seen the documentary THE ARISTOCRATS?) And kudos to Comedy Central for airing it almost uncensored. Seems the F word and the two C words are the last taboo. Just silly if you ask me, especially since you know exactly what they're saying.

As far s the roasts go, this one was pretty unfunny. Nothing offended me, but it was just kinda weak. Joan Rivers is 100% loathsome, so I thought i would be good, but meh. You're old, you're ugly, too much plastic surgery, your daughter's a hack, Tom Arnold sucks, Mario is gay, blah blah. I guess it's funnier if the person getting roasted isn't such a terrible person.

re: Highlights from the Joan Rivers Friar's Roast

I agree with Barney. I know some people still love her, but I don't understand why.

I think Joan Rivers is completely heartless. She seems to lack empathy, is unable to withstand any criticism (ever the aggrieved party!) and yet says people she's vicious to should get over it and grow up.

Huffington Post picked up an AP interview with her last week and it just captures everything I hate about her. (And it's funny, because one of the things I grew to hate about Joan at some point in the early-'80s stemmed from a Voice review of a stand up gig saying her her most frequently used phrase during the show was "Don't you hate...?" That's what I hate. Joan and her big hate).

Please note the utter lack of irony in her criticism of Robert Redford's facelift for not being as SUBTLE as the work she has had and for finding the temerity to call Chelsea Handler unfunny. Seriously. If Kathy Griffin didn't kiss her ass (a wise strategic move on KG's part), Joan would be saying she isn't funny either.
