it might surprise some around here the respect i have for hil, but i do. she's a brilliant person, has done a bang up job as a senator (even if i disagree with her almost all the time), and more than anyone else in the democratic party has positioned herself on the right (no pun intended) side of issues important to the american people. do i trust that she'd govern as a moderate if elected president? no f***ing way. but her stint as a senator has been marked by shrewd moves and attention to the people back home in ny. even if you disagree with her take on ny issues, you can't argue that she hasn't been out there on the forefront of ones that matter to nyers or that she hasnn't fought for ny's share of the pie on every single front.
i wouldn't vote for her, but i respect her immensely.
as far as her chances in '08? it all depends on what happens in '06. if the democrats manage to make marked gains in the house and senate behind howlin' howie, i think her moderate stances will hurt her. if, as i expect, the gop makes modest (or marked) gains in the congress, she'll look like the voice of reason compared to howie, nancy, harry, et. al.
i think the biggest problem she has is the democrat's lack of balls. too many people at the top are fearful that she's too polarizing a figure and will work like maniacs to keep her from getting the nomination (in this effort they'll no doubt be assisted by scads of the dumber republicans). if they'd have had balls, they'd have worked like hell to get howlin' howie the nod in '04 and allowed him to crash and burn and thus expel the fanatics from the temple and allow the moderate voices of people like the dlc to take the reins. as it is, it's a toss-up, i think until after the mid-terms.
i'd like to see her get the nomination, not because i want to see her win (and for the record i reallly don't think she would unless the gop does something incredibly stupid, which to my woe is never out of the question), but i would like to see a woman at least get the nod from one of the parties.
