re: Ho Jo's Is Closed

And with it the Harlequin rehearsal studios and the Gaiety, Mr Roxy.

I know the loss of the Gaiety doesn't make you particularly sad, but it was a part of the world of Broadway for many of us.

All those 4- and 5-story buildings that dated back to the turn of the century, they're all gone. Let's hope the theatres remain forever.

I'll miss Hojos. Sigh. Another remnant of my childhood (and 1970s Times Square) gone.

Sadly the food was never very good, but another happy childhood memory is gone. sniff sniff re: Ho Jo's Is Closed

The banana spits were good, but they charged $8 for them.

Nothing like their Clam Roll.

To Pal Joey

Just because I did not mention it does not mean I do not regret the Gaity going as well. Anything left of the old Times Square that goes is a loss. Probably the Loews Mayfair(a/k/a DeMille)sitting vacant for years will be the next to bite the dust

Jose--was that the clam roll at HoJo's or the clam roll at the Gaiety?

re: Ho Jo's Is Closed

My dads cousins Jack Rubinstein and Morris Rubinsein were the owners of HoJos and the entire building. Their office was right down the door from the gaiety. I remeber even when I was young wanting to go in there. Even after they both passed I was nervous about going in there for fear of being outed ( yes.. this hussy was in the closet at that point). Does anyone rember Ms Tiffany? She was the older lady that for years worked as their hostess ( we are talking till mid 80's here).

re: Ho Jo's Is Closed

I just heard it closed while listening to the radio. They mentioned that Jacques Pepin was a chef there....is that possible?

re: Ho Jo's Is Closed

He was a chef in one in Queens but liked the Times Square one better

Gene Hackman was also a doorman there many years ago - in the good old days

I remember Miss Tiffany very well. Her looks reminded me of Lotte Lenya. She always greeted me with a smile and asked what show I was going to see. She was a genuinely lovely lady. The DAILY NEWS did a story about her once.

And she was the best connected lady on broadway. She had acces to house seats for anything. I saw A Chorus Line two weeks after it went into the Shubert thanks to her.

Ate at a window booth one time and lost my appetite because of all the characters outside eyeballing what I was eating.

More importantly, the Gaity has gone with it. Ah, the many memories I have of enjoying a clam sandwich and then going for a bit of entertainment.

Dame,
I never ate in that place it was very seedy.

re: Ho Jo's Is Closed

Corine, darling, that was the whole point!

Many years ago, SPY magazine featured a brilliant article on things that were "unwittingly hip". Along with Mary Jane shoes, the signs in Dry Cleaning establishments and "Now and Then" and "Cafe Bustello" packaging labels, HoJos were near the top of the list.

I could not do it.
I eat in the Edison that is seedy enough.

On the news the other night, they had a story about selling off the fixtures. They interviewed this guy and he said "I hope they'll sell me the H and the O."
